Update: This week, the signing for the expansion of Highway A2 west of Warsaw. Followed by three years of construction (and traffic jams).

Portal Forsal.pl has learned that a contract for the renovation of the A2 highway west of Warsaw will be signed still this week. Temporary traffic management with speed limits set at 70-90 km/h and intermittent speed checks are set to be implemented “almost immediately.” The works will last for three years, until the second half of 2028, with the goal of adding one additional lane, resulting in four lanes between Warsaw (Konotopa interchange) and the exit to Pruszków, and three lanes on the section from Pruszków to Łódź Północ.

A2 Highway to Be Expanded

Those who have driven on A2 between Warsaw and the A1 motorway know it is a section with extremely high traffic volume almost regardless of the time of day. The lack of police patrols and the large number of trucks mean that traveling there is not always pleasant. In this regard, only the A4 motorway between Wrocław and Krzywa is probably worse. The General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways hopes that additional lanes will increase the road’s capacity and simultaneously improve safety on this section.

Heavy vehicle traffic in Europe. On A2 near Warsaw, significant traffic is generated by nearby logistics centers and passenger cars, which are not visible on this map.

Space for additional lanes has been reserved during the construction of highway A2, so there will be no need to go through time-consuming land acquisition processes. According to earlier plans, the expansion was supposed to begin in the first half of 2026, but with only one week left in that period, GDDKiA now has little time to sign the contract. Even if the highway expansion starts during the summer holidays—rumored to be around the turn of July and August, which would be a great gift for those going on vacation—the work might not be completed until the first half of 2029.

The disruptions are expected to occur at the latest near Warsaw, on the section from the Konotopa interchange to Grodzisk Mazowieckiego (source). Initial announcements suggested continuous availability of two lanes in each direction. It has now been clarified that one lane will have a 2+1 layout (narrowed lanes as before plus one lane in the opposite direction), while only the emergency lane will be available on the other. Speed limits of 70-90 km/h will also be in place, along with fixed speed cameras, which the road has been equipped for for some time.

During the expansion, the road surface will be replaced and the toll collection points removed. A vehicle inspection area with a scale will be set up near Pruszków.

Note from Elektrowozu’s editorial team: It’s interesting to wonder when a lane will be designated on the A2 for vehicles driven by humans with low levels of autonomy...
