Ford is thinking of forgetful drivers. The car will remember the signs they passed by.

Ford wants to add memory for signs and billboards to cars. The camera will store them, allowing the driver to later find a rest stop or restaurant they passed by.
What did we just pass?
Did you pass a sign for a restaurant or rest stop on the road and not have time to read where to turn? Ford proposes a system that captures similar information using a camera and stores it. The driver can then return to this information on the car’s screen later.
A patent application published on October 15, 2026, describes the use of external car cameras. These would capture information signs along the road once the relevant mode is activated. In addition to signs, the system also takes into account advertising billboards.
Practical applications include finding gas stations, hotels, or places to rest. Instead of trying to remember a sign seen briefly, the driver can simply retrieve the stored image. This way, the information remains accessible even after passing the sign.
From ads straight to the menu
The saved images could be accessed via touch, voice, or gesture. Logging in also takes into account time data and current location. This would allow the crew to more accurately determine where a specific sign was located and when it passed by.
Ford mentions, for example, storing images from the last fifteen minutes. However, this is just one of the available settings. Users could also filter by content and choose to display only signs for rest areas, for instance.
An interesting feature is the integration with additional information. For an ad image of a restaurant, the system could retrieve details such as hours of operation, the menu, or available services from a server. This would then assist the crew in navigating to the chosen location.
Still a way off for production cars
On longer trips, the feature could be useful for a passenger looking for an appropriate stop. However, logging in generally works with the system user. It does not state that viewing stored images is reserved only for the person sitting next to the driver.
For drivers, a car’s similar memory feature could be especially helpful on unfamiliar routes. Information such as the distance to a gas station or restaurant, which is seen briefly, is easily forgotten. The ability to return to the sign would simplify planning stops.
For now, this is just a patent application, and Ford has not announced a specific model or release date. Only a potential production version will show what the feature will look like in practice. Regardless, the idea addresses a situation that many drivers are familiar with.
