Ford and Geely are forming a joint venture. Chinese technology in Geely and Ford models from the factory in, of course, Spain

Ford and Geely Automobile Holdings announced they are forming a joint venture (66:34) that will enable several vehicles built using Geely’s technology to be produced at Ford’s plant in Valencia, Spain. These cars will be offered under both Geely and Ford brands, including the compact Ford Bronco and a “completely new” crossover. The crossover is set to be “multi-energy,” meaning we can expect both a gasoline (hybrid) version and an electric one. The first vehicle is expected to be ready by 2028.

Geely as Europe’s Chinese ally for automakers

The plant in Valencia currently produces only the Ford Kuga, although it has the capacity to manufacture up to 500,000 vehicles per year — meaning it has significant spare capacity. Geely’s decision to enter into a partnership is thus a lifeline for Ford, especially since the company has been losing market share in Europe over the years. From January to the end of June 2026, Ford sold only 133,000 vehicles on the Old Continent, barely surpassing BYD (131,000) and SAIC Motor (128,000). In short: the Chinese will help Ford compete with… other Chinese companies.

A total of five vehicles are set to leave the factory, including two Geely models. Given that Ford does not seem likely to discontinue the Kuga, the American brand’s strategy appears clear: the Kuga, Bronco, and a “completely new” crossover. Geely’s plans and the technology of this Chinese manufacturer are much more interesting. Since both the Kuga and Bronco are C-SUV models, Geely should use a C-segment platform in Europe to make the joint venture commercially viable. This strongly suggests the GEA (Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture, formerly Global Intelligent Electric Architecture) platform or its newer version, GEA Evo.

And now the most interesting part: the GEA platform is used for producing the Geely E5 (formerly: Geely EX5) as well as the cheaper, record-popular model in China, the Geely E2 (formerly: Geely EX2, also known as Geely Xingyuan). While the Chinese company has not revealed which models will be produced in Valencia, it has announced two electric vehicles — so the speculation by Elektrowozu’s editorial team could turn out to be correct. The first car is expected to be ready by 2028, which is quite fast considering that reorganizing a factory for new models usually takes 1–1.5 years.

The joint venture will allow the Chinese manufacturer to avoid EU tariffs on electric vehicles (and in the future, hybrids as well), and it will also represent the third method, alongside Volvo and Smart, for introducing technology from China to the Old Continent.
