Ford Fiesta ST as an electric car before its comeback

Ford is planning a new generation of models designed specifically for the European market. According to a report, a key part of this strategy is the introduction of vehicles featuring the “ST” badge. The upcoming new Fiesta is expected to be based on the architecture of the electric Renault 5, which could enable a revival of ST models.
Christian Weingartner, Ford’s European product chief, emphasized the importance of high-performance vehicles in an interview with Auto Express. He said no decisions have been made regarding naming, but a performance series is necessary to maintain credibility. “We really want to have capable vehicles,” said Weingartner.
The technical foundation is provided by Renault’s RG EV Small electric vehicle architecture, which the French company uses for the Renault 5 as well as for the high-performance version of the A290 made by its subsidiary Alpine. The latter model features a wider track width and a lower driving position compared to other vehicles on the same platform.
The current A290 delivers up to 160 kW (218 horsepower), enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and reach speeds of up to 170 km/h. It remains to be seen whether the Fiesta ST will be equipped with its own more powerful electric motors. Alpine’s architecture also utilizes a limited-slip differential to enhance performance. Ford could adjust the suspension for the ST independently.

According to Auto Express, no major changes to the bodywork are expected for the ST model. It is presumed that only slight modifications to the standard Fiesta will be made, along with new wheels and ST emblems. Additional power could come from a second engine mounted at the rear, enabling an all-wheel-drive version.
Jim Baumbick, CEO of Ford Europe, explained to Auto Express the goals behind product development. He emphasized that they aim to create products for specific customers and highlight features that are important to them. The driving experience is supposed to feel “simply right.” There are no specific timelines or prices for the Fiesta ST yet. As Ford wants to accelerate the launch of new European models, further models are expected after the standard Fiesta goes on sale in one to two years.
