The Ford Explorer and Capri can tow up to 2200 kg. The ball hitch capacity has risen to 90 kg.

With the 2026 model update, the electric Ford Explorer and its sibling Capri can pull a towed vehicle with brakes weighing between 1800 and 2200 kg. Ford outlined the changes in a statement on May 22, 2026, from Cologne, and the vehicles are already available for purchase. The RWD versions previously had a limit of around 1000 kg, which significantly restricted their use as tow vehicles.
Towing Capacity and Hook: Limits by Version
The limits depend on the powertrain and battery. According to Ford, they are as follows:
Version
Battery
Towing Capacity with Brakes
Standard Range RWD
58 kWh
1800 kg
Extended Range RWD
79 kWh
2000 kg
Extended Range AWD
77 kWh
2200 kg
The Standard Range now has a towing capacity of 80% (around 1000 kg), while the Extended Range RWD model gets twice as much as before, at 2000 kg instead of 1000 kg. The AWD version allows the highest capacity of 2200 kg. These changes apply to both models, the Explorer and Capri.
The allowable tire pressure has also increased from 70 to 90 kg. This is important for anyone who towes a trailer with heavy e-bikes. With 70 kg, two powered bikes could use up the entire limit.
2000-2200 kg is the level at which a typical camping trailer can be towed. The Standard Range, with 1800 kg of towing capacity and 190 HP along with 350 Nm of torque, is more suitable for a lighter trailer or a boat setup. Range drops significantly when towing a trailer, so routes need to be planned around charging stations rather than just based on catalog specifications.
The update also introduced the new Android-based SYNC Move software, featuring a fresh design and simpler operation. The sliding screen and the Private Locker behind it remain unchanged. Two new parking functions were added. Reversing Assist helps with reversing in tight spaces, while Trained Park Assist remembers up to 5 parking maneuvers and repeats them automatically.
Standard Range with LFP Battery
The Standard Range version now comes equipped with a 58 kWh LFP battery instead of the previous 52 kWh NMC battery. It delivers 190 horsepower, 350 Nm of torque, and an acceleration time from 0-100 km/h of 8.0 seconds. The WLTP range is up to 444 km for the Explorer and 463 km for the Capri. We covered this in more detail in our article about the changes to the Explorer and the LFP battery.
LFP can be regularly charged to 100% without needing to conserve battery life for long trips. The downside is the lower peak DC charging power, which has dropped from 145 to 110 kW. Ford does not provide prices or delivery dates in Poland.
When pairing with a trailer that has a parking space, it’s not just the charger’s power that matters, but also whether you can fit into that space at all. This is a question worth asking before your first trip.
