Fiat is preparing to introduce a new electric car for the entry-level segment, which is set to be based on the same platform as Citroën’s revived 2CV model from Stellantis. This small electric vehicle could be marketed under the name Koala.

According to Autocar, the new model is likely to be the electric counterpart to the existing gasoline-powered Panda, now also known as Pandina. Its development utilizes Stellantis’ new dedicated platform for small electric vehicles, which is also intended for the Citroën 2CV. That model is expected to hit the market in 2028.

The vehicle’s design is based on a proposed EU regulation for electric cars. This rule aims to encourage manufacturers to sell more affordable electric vehicles with a length of less than 4.2 meters. Inspired by Japan’s Kei-Car model, the regulation seeks to reduce prices and facilitate the transition to electric mobility in the mass market.

Arnauld Belloni, Fiat’s new CEO, said at the Paris auto show according to the report: “We are currently working on several vehicles based on the E-Car platform. We are developing a small car that will be built on the 2CV, and it will create a real ‘Wow’ effect.”

Design chief François Leboine stated that Fiat’s first electric car is ready alongside the 2CV, but the brand has decided not to unveil the current developments yet. After introducing larger models such as the Grande Panda and the SUV Grizzly, the focus is now on reviving the small car lineup.

Fiat has already registered a brand name for Koala. This follows the Italians’ pattern of naming various Panda series models after bears. Belloni ruled out reviving earlier versions of the compact car based on the Citroën 2CV, describing the concept as “a completely different approach, not neo-retro.”

According to Autocar, elements from a design competition for Italian students could influence the design of the upcoming small electric car. The winning concept, Ippo (pictured), a boxy hatchback, along with the second-place entries Lumo Su Misura and Fizz, could serve as inspiration.
