The Fiat Multiplay, a new concept vehicle in MPV format (Multi-Purpose Vehicle), could move into series production. According to the new brand chief Arnaud Belloni, the model is set to be launched as a family-oriented vehicle. The concept, recently unveiled at the Paris Auto Show, combines features of an SUV with those of a pickup truck.

The design of the Multiplay is inspired by the large footprint and spacious interior of the 1998 Multipla. Belloni emphasized the significance of this project for the company. He described the concept as “absolutely important” and told reporters that he was convinced of the need for a family car in the lineup.

The new Fiat CEO sees MPVs as a valuable addition to the portfolio alongside SUVs. Developing a new generation of large sedans is one of his priorities. This involves using SUV elements such as larger wheels and existing platforms, but in a newly interpreted form.

A version of the Multiplay with a length just under 4.5 meters could fill a market gap. According to Autocar, design chief François Leboine describes the concept as a blueprint for an era after SUVs. The goal is to create a large sedan that appeals to SUV buyers. Since the way people travel has changed compared to previous decades, the project represents an attempt to find the “next big thing.”

A final decision on production depends on customer feedback. Leboine noted that innovations might encounter a market situation not yet ready for changes. Additionally, balancing technical feasibility with low costs must be maintained during implementation. Within Fiat’s parent company, Stellantis, it is crucial to wisely reuse existing components.

If production does go ahead, it is expected to take at least two to three years. Belloni noted that this will only happen “if we act quickly.” It is not yet known what propulsion technology Fiat plans to use for the Multiplay. The manufacturer has neither confirmed an electric system nor any other drive options. The Italians present this concept study as a foundation for developing future solutions for family vehicles.
