The Fiat 500 Electric has no longer been Stellantis’ best-selling electric car for some time, at least not in Germany. One reason might be the high price of the 500 Electric. The car costs at least 25,990 euros, which is more than the base version of the VW ID. Polo. Stellantis plans to address this by 2027: LFP batteries are set to make this compact car more affordable. And not just it.

During the conference call regarding third-quarter financial results, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa said:

"In Europe, we are clearly seeing an acceleration in electrification, driven both by oil prices and regulatory requirements. The positive aspect is that by 2027 we will take two very important steps that matter for competition in this area. We will introduce our globally competitive STLA-One platform, which will be our most competitive platform for segments B, C, and the lower end of segment D. This is the core of the European market. Additionally, we will switch from LMC battery chemistry [likely referring to NMC] to LFP battery chemistry in many, many model lines. This will result in significant savings on battery costs. (Antonio Filosa)

Filosa did not reveal which LFP battery models would be used. However, Stellantis’ Europe head, Emanuele Cappellano, confirmed in July that the Fiat 500 Elektro will switch to LFP cells by 2027 and be offered at lower prices. This is reported by the website Autonext.co. The Peugeot E-208, set to launch in 2027, is also expected to use LFP batteries. It will be the first vehicle built on the new STLA One platform. Production of the E-208 is planned to take place in Saragossa as before. There, Stellantis and CATL are currently constructing an LFP battery cell factory with an intended annual capacity of 50 GWh, which is said to be completed by 2027.

But back to the Fiat 500 Electric. It is currently available with either 21 or 37 kWh of net battery capacity. At least the 21-kWh version could be equipped with an LFP battery of similar storage capacity. For the larger version, finding a replacement might be more difficult, as energy density is a key factor here, and LFP generally offers about one-third less density by rough estimation. For comparison, the Leapmotor T03 with an LFP battery also has 37 kWh of net capacity, but it has an eight-centimeter longer wheelbase.

The Leapmotor has a weaker motor that also consumes a lot of energy. As a result, its range is lower despite having the same battery capacity. However, the Leapmotor is significantly cheaper. The €30,990 price tag for the Fiat is still quite high. The VW ID. Polo, in its base version with a 37-kWh battery and almost the same range (323 km), costs less than €25,000. Even then, Fiat doesn’t offer the base version of the 500 Elektro for less than €25,990.

Fiat faces the consequences of the high price of the 500 Elektro in terms of sales figures. In the first nine months of 2026, around 7,500 new units were registered. That’s not bad, but the Leapmotor T03 saw around 7,700 units sold, while the Citroën e-C3 and e-C3 Aircross combined sold over 10,000 units.

More on LFP:

In summary

The Fiat 500 Electric looks undoubtedly good, which we have to admit. In comparison, the Leapmotor T03 is an ugly duckling. But in times when many people are tighter on their budgets, price also plays a role. Fiat could at least lower the price significantly for the base model by using an LFP battery. A Stellantis executive confirmed this plan back in summer 2026. Whether a price cut will actually happen remains unconfirmed officially.
