The first unit of the fully electric Ferrari Luce intended for regular production was sold at an auction for 40 million US dollars (34.5 million euros). According to the Italian sports car manufacturer, this makes it the most expensive new vehicle ever sold at an auction. All proceeds from this vehicle, designated as “Chassis 0,” will be donated to the Ferrari Foundation for future educational initiatives.

Ferrari introduced the Luce in Italy in May at an introductory price of 550,000 euros. The version offered at the auction was configured through the Tailor Made customization program and features a specially developed mother-of-pearl finish as well as a uniquely designed interior. The combination of the first production chassis, custom configuration, and charitable purpose fundamentally distinguishes this vehicle from a regular series model.

The Luce is Ferrari’s first all-battery electric series model and also the brand’s first five-seater. This four-door vehicle features four electric motors, a 122-kWh battery, and an electrical system operating at up to 880 volts. Ferrari claims a range of over 530 kilometers and a top speed exceeding 310 km/h. The system power output is 772 kW (1050 horsepower), enabling it to reach 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds. The battery and key electric drive components are manufactured or assembled in Maranello.

The launch of the Luce in May caused a lot of buzz. Its unusual proportions and clear departure from Ferrari’s traditional design language drew criticism. The exterior design was spearheaded by former Apple designer Jony Ive through his studio LoveFrom. The interior received less criticism and gained relatively more approval for its minimalist design and intuitive operation logic.

CEO Benedetto Vigna said in May that the new electric model is seeing demand from both existing and new customers. For Ferrari’s electrification strategy, the Luce remains a single model within a still mixed powertrain portfolio. The luxury brand plans to continue offering multiple powertrain technologies for longer, including plug-in hybrids. Regular deliveries of the first electric car are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
