The L5 is the second model in the ID. AURA lineup and its first all-electric sedan, expected to hit the market within this year.

The new car is developed on Volkswagen's CMP platform and measures 4,883 millimeters long.

FAW-Volkswagen's ID. AURA L5 all-electric sedan will open for pre-orders on November 16, becoming the second model in the lineup after the T6 SUV that went on sale in September.

Local automotive media outlet Auto Home reported the plan on Friday, saying the L5 is expected to be launched within this year. FAW-Volkswagen has not yet announced the arrangement through official channels.

FAW-Volkswagen previously teased the model, positioning it as the first all-electric family sedan in the ID. AURA lineup and saying it will form a "new energy twin-star" pairing with the T6, creating a dual-track layout spanning sedans and SUVs.

The L5 is developed on Volkswagen's CMP (Compact Main Platform) all-electric platform. It appeared in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) new vehicle filing catalog on October 16, and FAW-Volkswagen released official images the same day.

The L5 measures 4,883 millimeters long, 1,881 millimeters wide and 1,506 millimeters tall, with a wheelbase of 2,820 millimeters.

According to the filing, the single-motor version delivers a peak power output of 155 kW (208 hp) and a top speed of 175 kilometers per hour (109 miles per hour), while the dual-motor version has peak power of 155 kW at both the front and rear motors.

The entire lineup is equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with suppliers including CATL (HKEX: 3750) and Gotion High-tech (SZSE: 002074).

The L5 carries a LiDAR unit on the roof, available as an option on all 4 filed variants. The new car will feature Volkswagen's first self-developed one-stage end-to-end driver assistance solution, the Carizon HS8 (Hyper Sense 8).

Carizon is a joint venture between Volkswagen's software subsidiary Cariad and Chinese AI chipmaker Horizon Robotics (HKEX: 9660), formally established in December 2023.

The solution supports parking-space-to-parking-space urban NOA (Navigation on Autopilot), highway NOA and multiple parking assistance functions, though FAW-Volkswagen has not yet disclosed details of the L5's driver assistance chips.

As of now, FAW-Volkswagen has not announced the L5's pricing, range or battery capacity.

One of the biggest design highlight of the L5 is its power liftgate, which opens to an angle of more than 70 degrees with a lateral opening width of more than 1,000 millimeters, aiming to address the difficulty of loading bulky items in traditional three-box sedans.

The L5 is the production version of the ID. AURA concept car unveiled by Volkswagen at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2025, jointly developed by Chinese and German design teams and targeting young Chinese families.

The ID. AURA lineup's first model, the T6, went on sale on September 20 with 4 trims priced from 129,900 yuan ($19,340) to 166,900 yuan, and the entire lineup uses the CEA (China Electronic Architecture) electronic and electrical architecture jointly developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV).

Under a plan announced earlier this year, FAW-Volkswagen will launch 4 all-new new energy vehicles (NEVs) in 2026, including 2 ID. AURA models, and the roll-out of the L5 will fulfill the ID. AURA portion of that plan.

Volkswagen has begun real-world road testing and data collection for L3 technology in Hefei.
