Polestar has officially confirmed that it has ended production of its pioneering Polestar 2 model. Following internet rumours, the Swedish performance brand told EV Powered that the final cars had rolled off the line at its Luqiao factory in China.

“Polestar 2 very recently ended production,” a Polestar UK spokesperson said. “Sales, however still remain open in the UK into 2027. We plan to pay tribute to the first generation Polestar 2 soon as we prepare for a new era with the arrival of the Polestar 2 successor in 2027.”

The new Polestar 2 will be joined in 2028 by the compact Polestar 7 SUV, bringing the brand’s line-up to six models, up from just one in 2024.

Polestar 2 history

The ‘P2‘ was introduced in 2020 for the 2021 model year (MY) as Polestar’s first mainstream model. Until 2017, Polestar was Volvo’s performance arm in the same way ‘M’ serves BMW, and RS serves Audi.

Following the split from Volvo, Polestar became a standalone electric car brand, albeit one owned by Geely; the Chinese automotive giant that owns Volvo. Despite being two separate companies, Volvo’s Swedish DNA and its minimalist Scandinavian design language has undoubtedly influenced Polestar’s decision to position itself as a “design-led” carmaker.

Since its debut, total sales figures for the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4-rivalling Polestar 2 have surpassed just under 300,00 globally, making it the Polestar’s best-selling car to-date.

Until it introduced the Polestar 4 in 2023, the Polestar 3 in 2023, and the Polestar 5 in 2026, the P2 was the only model Polestar model available. This heavy lifting in terms of keeping the brand afloat means that the Polestar 2 comprises two out of every three Polestars ever sold.

New Polestar 2 range and design

In 2027, the Polestar 2 name will continue, albeit in a different guise. The all-new Polestar 2 is almost certain to swap out the outgoing model’s 400V electrical architecture for the 800V SPA3 platform shared with Volvo. Used to underpin the new, electric-only Volvo EX60, the SPA3 running gear can offer a range of more than 500 miles.

The outgoing Polestar 2’s Volvo-inspired design is likely to be replaced by Polestar’s proprietary design language, which it has been nurturing with the arrival of the 4. This unique aesthetic includes split ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights, and an emphasis on stylish-yet-functional, high-end Scandinavian design cues inside and out.

The new 2 could also be the first new-generation Polestar to adopt physical interior buttons en masse, after company CEO, Michael Lohscheller, acknowledged earlier this year that its decision to place key car functions such as climate control and multimedia in touchscreen were a source of frustration were owners.

Lohscheller also confirmed that the next-gen Polestar 2 will remain as a fastback, despite earlier reports suggesting that it could morph into an SUV.

Polestar 2 UK pricing

In the UK, the existing Polestar 2 is currently priced from £40,210 for the entry-level Standard range Single motor, £44,210 for the Long range Single motor, and £48,210 for the Long range, Dual motor. Each is currently subject to a £5,000 discount.

The Long range Single motor is the longest-legged of the bunch with a 409-mile range. Long range Dual motor cars rank second with a 370-mile range, while the Standard range Single motor is capable of 344 miles on a single charge.
