EVgo is adding 400+ fast chargers where you grocery shop

EVgo is adding more than 400 fast-charging stalls at grocery-anchored shopping centers across the US, giving EV drivers more places to plug in while they shop or grab a coffee.

The chargers will be installed at properties owned or operated by Regency Centers, a name most shoppers probably won’t recognize because it isn’t a retail chain. Regency is the landlord and developer behind more than 480 shopping centers in the US – think suburban plazas built around supermarkets such as Publix, Kroger, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Safeway, and Albertsons, with restaurants, pharmacies, and other everyday businesses alongside them.

More than 80% of Regency’s portfolio is anchored by a major grocery store, so these are places people already visit regularly rather than charging stops that require a special trip.

The new EVgo chargers are planned for shopping centers in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and other states. The companies didn’t provide a construction timeline.

Each location will have up to 24 high-power fast chargers. EVgo says they’ll be capable of delivering a full charge in as little as 15 minutes, depending on the EV.

“EV drivers are looking for convenient charging options where they already spend their time, like grocery-anchored shopping centers,” said Scott Levitan, executive vice president of growth at EVgo. “Expanding our partnership with Regency will help us meet growing customer demand while making public fast charging more accessible in the places people shop, dine, and connect with their communities.”

EVgo installed its first charger at a Regency property in 2020 and now operates more than 150 charging stalls at its shopping centers. The 400-plus planned additions will increase Regency’s overall EV charging footprint by more than 20%, according to the companies.

EVgo says around half of drivers who stop at a charging site go into a nearby store or restaurant.
