These are the plug-in hybrids with the longest electric range.

These are the plug-in hybrids with the longest electric range.

With these plug-in hybrids, it’s possible for some to get through an entire week without worrying about charging the battery or “starting” the internal combustion engine.

Plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds: the ability to cover daily distances in 100% electric mode and the freedom to travel without relying solely on charging stations.

For those who can charge at home or at work, a plug-in hybrid can allow them to travel throughout the week without using a single drop of gasoline. And given current gasoline prices, this could result in significant savings.

In recent years, with the arrival of models offering electric ranges of 100 km or more, it has become possible to charge only once a week.

In this buying guide, we have compiled the plug-in hybrids with the longest electric ranges currently available in Portugal for those who want to delay their next trip to a gas station or charger as long as possible.

Volkswagen Golf eHybrid — up to 144 km

Volkswagen Golf eHybrid — front 3/4 view

The Volkswagen Golf is practically a household name, and in its eHybrid version, it boasts an electric range of 144 km (combined WLTP cycle).

It combines a 1.5 TSI engine with another electric motor and a battery with a capacity of 25.7 kWh (19.7 kWh usable), which can be charged via alternating current at up to 11 kW or via direct current at up to 40 kW. Under these conditions, charging from 10% to 80% takes about 26 minutes. At home, a full charge can take approximately two and a half hours.

It has a maximum combined power of 204 hp, distributed between the 150 hp from the 1.5 TSI engine and the 85 kW (116 hp) from the electric motor. The officially announced fuel consumption is 1.1 l/100 km.

The Golf eHybrid is also the most affordable model in this buying guide, with prices starting at 45,173 euros. As alternatives within the Volkswagen Group, there are other models with the same powertrain: the SEAT Leon, Audi A3, and Skoda Octavia are among them.

Omoda 9 SHS-P — up to 145 km

Plug-in hybrids with long ranges have been a focus for Chinese manufacturers, and the Omoda 9 SHS-P is a testament to this. It is a large-sized plug-in hybrid SUV that offers not only up to 145 km of electric range but also a high combined power output of 537 horsepower.

The hybrid system combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 143 horsepower (105 kW) with three electric motors (175 kW, 75 kW, and 90 kW).

The battery has a useful capacity of 34.46 kWh, and when charging is needed, the Omoda 9 SHS-P supports AC charging up to 6.6 kW and DC charging up to 65 kW. The brand also claims a combined fuel consumption of 1.7 l/100 km.

In Portugal, the Omoda 9 is available in only one version, with prices starting at 52,900 euros.

Volvo XC90 Long Range Plug-in Hybrid — up to 162 km

Volvo XC90 T8 - 3/4 front view

Volvo has just joined the group of plug-in hybrids with high electric range, with the introduction of the updated XC60 and XC90. For the larger XC90, the electric range is up to 162 km.

If you drive up to 30 km per day, theoretically this XC90 has enough range to cover commutes from Monday to Friday without recharging and still have charge left in the battery by the end of the week.

To achieve this, it uses a 41.2 kWh battery (37.9 kWh usable), which is larger than that of many electric vehicles, and can be charged via alternating current at up to 11 kW. Under these conditions, a full charge takes about four hours. Despite the battery size, it is not available with direct current charging.

The hybrid system combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 250 horsepower and an electric motor of 130 kW (177 horsepower) mounted on the rear axle. The combined power can reach 461 horsepower. Volvo claims a combined fuel consumption of 1.6 l/100 km.

Volvo XC60 Long Range Plug-in Hybrid — up to 200 km

In the case of the Volvo XC60, which is slightly more compact and lighter than the XC90, the same 37.9 kWh (usable) battery capacity already allows for an electric range of up to 200 km.

The SUV combines the same 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, delivering 180 horsepower in the T6 version, with the electric motor from the XC90, resulting in a total combined power of 356 horsepower.

It also does not allow charging via direct current (DC), so a full charge using alternating current takes about 4 hours. The official fuel consumption is 1.0 l/100 km.

The Volvo XC60 T6 Long Range Hybrid Plug-in is available starting at 71,970 euros. For those seeking more power, the T8 version with 461 hp is available. In this version, the range drops to 187 km.

Denza Z9 GT DM-i — up to 203 km

Denza is BYD’s premium brand, and the Z9 GT is its top-of-the-line model. This large-sized shooting brake was updated this year and, in addition to the hybrid plug-in version, is also available with a 100% electric variant.

It is the most powerful model on this list, with a combined maximum power of 776 horsepower, ensuring acceleration rates that were once the exclusive domain of supercars just a few years ago. It features three electric motors—one in the front and two in the back—along with a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.

The battery, with a total capacity of 63.8 kWh, rivals that of many electric vehicles and enables it to exceed a range of 200 kilometers on electricity alone. Like its all-electric version, the Z9 GT hybrid plug-in incorporates BYD’s Flash charging technology, allowing it to go from 10% to 97% battery charge in just nine minutes. Portugal will receive 50 ultra-fast BYD chargers by the end of 2027.

The price of the Denza Z9 GT DM starts at 105,537 euros, making it the most expensive model in this group.

Denza D9 DM-i — up to 210 km

It’s interesting that the plug-in hybrid with the longest range currently available in Portugal is also the largest of all. And it’s not an SUV. The Denza D9 is a large-sized minivan with seven seats, designed for those who need space without sacrificing generous electric range.

The MPV offers up to 210 km of range in pure electric mode, powered by a battery with a capacity of 58.5 kWh.

The plug-in hybrid system combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 120 hp with two electric motors: one front-mounted motor at 170 kW (231 hp) and another rear-mounted motor at 45 kW (61 hp). The combined power is 354 hp, with all-wheel drive.

In terms of charging, the D9 supports AC and DC charging at up to 11 kW and 559 kW respectively. In Portugal, the Denza D9 DM-i is available starting at 79,576 euros.
