Purchasing an electric car for less than 20,000 euros is now possible. And in the coming years, the range of options will continue to grow.

Electric cars are gradually making their way into the lower price segments of the market. There are already several models available for sale in Portugal that cost less than 20,000 euros.

This is an increasing trend that will gain even more momentum in the years ahead, with several models already announced that are set to enter the market at prices below this figure.

This was the main topic of another episode of Auto Rádio, Razão Automóvel’s podcast supported by PiscaPisca.pt, where we discussed the most affordable electric cars currently available in Portugal and their potential impact on the market.

With new models arriving and well-known brands making a comeback, several vehicles are on the way, including the Nissan Pixo and the Volkswagen ID.1, with production of the latter scheduled for next year at Autoeuropa in Palmela. Will it arrive in time to capture a share of the market from the affordable electric cars launched this year?

What does the market want?

Despite investments in affordable electric cars, the Portuguese market seems to prefer different options. Market data shows that Portuguese consumers continue to choose vehicles from higher segments, such as the Tesla Model 3, which was the best-selling electric car in Portugal during the first seven months of the year. This raises the question: Who are these new electric cars meant for?
