300,000 Electric Cars in Austria for the First Time

By the end of July 2026, according to Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility, and Infrastructure, 304,328 fully battery-powered passenger cars were on Austrian roads – a new record high. Meanwhile, the share of electric vehicles among all new registrations in July reached another record level: 27.39 percent. An additional 7,073 new electric vehicles were added alone in that month.

The sharp increase in sales volume is evident when looking at past years: The 100,000-unit mark was reached in September 2022. It took another 27 months to reach the next 100,000 vehicles. Austria then crossed the threshold from 200,000 to 300,000 electric cars in just about 19 months. In some individual states, over 30 percent of all new car buyers now choose an electric vehicle.

"More and more people are opting for electric cars because the range of options is expanding, the technology is more advanced, and charging infrastructure continues to grow," said Transport Minister Peter Hanke.

As the number of vehicles increases, Austria continues to expand its public charging network. 676 new charging stations were added in July, bringing the total to 3,817 since the start of 2026. The country now has around 39,500 public charging stations, with the goal of reaching 40,000 by summer.
