Too high energy costs in Italy, Stellantis fights back

The cost of energy is too high in Italy. Stellantis, under attack over another application for wage subsidies, notes that these high costs make it increasingly difficult for them to remain competitive. The image above was taken in Mirafiori at the start of production of the 500 hybrid.

Too high energy costs: “We invest, but…”

too high energy costs

Even large industrial groups get angry, in their own way... Stellantis notes that “it has been working for a year and a half to develop an ambitious plan to strengthen its industrial presence in Italy. With over twenty models already produced and more to come.” The plan, according to Antonio Filosa’s leadership, is “ambitious because it must be implemented in a clearly unfavorable context. The market has shrunk by one-fifth compared to pre-Covid levels, and there is competition from outside the EU with competitive advantages that are unattainable in Europe, further reducing the market space for European manufacturers. There is also a serious lack of competitiveness among Europeans, which is even more pronounced in countries like ours, especially regarding energy costs.”

The new 500 (including electric versions) targets 2030

too expensive energy

It is in the field of energy that our government has done little or nothing, delaying everything until nuclear power in the next decade (perhaps). Meanwhile, as shown a few nights ago on Presa Diretta on Rai Tre, Italy continues to pay prices that are more than a third higher than those in France and Spain. Despite this, Stellantis emphasizes, “One after another, we have secured and revitalized all our plants, starting with Mirafiori. At the end of last year, we introduced the new 500 hybrid, which has already allowed for a significant increase in production. For example, in just the first half of this year alone, we produced more cars than in the entire year 2025.” The new 500 is not the only initiative at Mirafiori. There are also productions of electric transmissions e-DCT, the first circular economy hub, and a battery research center. Starting in 2030, a new generation will arrive.

The launch of the 500 model, even the electric version, has been postponed several times.
