The Hannover-based energy services provider Enercity has launched its 2,000th public charging station. The company’s charging network currently includes around 1,760 AC and 240 DC charging stations. Enercity is now active in more than 50 municipalities across the country.

  • Enercity connected its first charging station to the grid in 2010 and has since expanded its network so significantly that the company based in Hanover can now celebrate reaching 2,000 public charging points. As a result, Enercity is among the major operators of public charging infrastructure in Germany, with services available in over 50 municipalities. Nearly 90 percent of its charging stations provide alternating current, while the remaining roughly 10 percent supply direct current.

"Our charging infrastructure is not only reliable but is also becoming increasingly smart," emphasizes Markus Dehn, head of electric mobility at Enercity. "At the same time, we are able to assist more and more municipalities in establishing a future-ready charging infrastructure." According to Dehn, solutions like SmartLaden via the Enercity easyGo app can already be used at most existing charging stations to automate charging processes and schedule them during optimal times.

In terms of nationwide coverage, Enercity operates from Cuxhaven in the north to Friedrichshafen in the south; major cities such as Hamburg, Hannover, Karlsruhe, and Berlin also fall within the company’s service area. According to data from the Federal Network Agency, Enercity ranks seventh among energy providers with charging services, and first in Lower Saxony.

Enercity will continue to expand its services in the coming years. Wiebke Kraus, head of e-Mobility sales at Enercity, explained this in detail during a recent presentation at electrive LIVE. You can watch the recording here. It is already confirmed that Enercity will soon set up public charging infrastructure in Frankfurt am Main as well.

Good news for charging infrastructure in Germany. For this business area and level of commitment, enercity is surely paying a high price. Can this business area be profitable? – please be honest about the full costs, including investments, necessary staff, resources, and operating expenses: how is this supposed to work? If, for example, AC chargers are occupied half the time by hybrids with minimal charging amounts, and overall usage is far below what’s needed for profitability. Personally, I think the AC charging business will remain unprofitable for companies in the long term. It will be very difficult to achieve break-even overall, which is ultimately not sustainable and will eventually lead to abandonment. Well, enough of the positive vibes... I’m rooting for enercity and hoping their shareholders don’t pay too close attention to the numbers. Sometimes it’s not worth it after all.

Just for a nice press article like this.

It would be great if Enercity didn’t charge exorbitant prices. 47ct/kWh for AC! Outrageous. On top of that, they have a monopoly position along with the city of Hannover in public areas. It’s simply bad for customers. Other utility companies manage to offer prices around 30-39ct.
