It’s not news that more electric cars are sold across the border than here. But now this trend is reaching alarming proportions. One country, driven also by gasoline prices, is heavily investing in EVs. Meanwhile, our own country shows no interest in electric vehicles without incentives, preferring plug-in hybrids instead—going against the trend in the rest of Europe. As a result, major manufacturers like Tesla now show clear disinterest in Italy, focusing all their efforts on France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—the three leading electric vehicle markets. It raises the question of who is making a mistake between us and these three countries: these are strategic choices, and those who go down the wrong path will pay a heavy price in the years to come.

A duel between Tesla and Renault

In France, electric vehicles account for 38%, making them the leading type of propulsion alongside hybrids (with mild hybrids at 20% and full hybrids at 18%). Gasoline cars make up only 12%, plug-in hybrids account for 6%, and diesel accounts for just 2%. In the electric vehicle market, France seems to be a competition between Tesla and Renault. While the Model Y clearly takes the top spot with 4,622 units sold, the French brand has four models in the top 10. The R5 is second with 2,316 units sold, ahead of the Scenic (1,745) and the Twingo (1,574). The only Renault model missing from the top 10 is the R4, which is expected to see a revival. Stellantis, which focuses more on hybrids than electric vehicles, has two models in the top ten: the e-C3 is fifth with 1,443 units sold, and the Peugeot e-208 is eighth (966).
