A analysis by Automobilwoche of the government’s electric vehicle subsidy program shows that only 28.2 percent of the approved vehicles were produced in Germany. Of the total 26,875 applications, 7,590 corresponded to models manufactured in the Federal Republic.

The best-selling model under this subsidy program is the Tesla Model Y, with 3,000 units sold. It is produced by the U.S. company at its factory in Brandenburg near Berlin. In second place is the Skoda Elroq, with 2,148 units, manufactured by Volkswagen’s subsidiary in Czech Mlada Boleslav.

China is the second most important source country, accounting for 6,622 vehicles and a share of 24.6 percent. The best-selling model from the People’s Republic is Tesla’s Model 3, produced locally in China, with 1,517 units sold. The Cupra Tavascan from Volkswagen’s subsidiary Seat and the Dacia Spring from the Renault group are also manufactured in China.

Among Chinese brands, Leapmotor stands out with 1,456 vehicles, followed by BYD with its Dolphin Surf model (440 units). About half of Leapmotor’s sales came from the compact car T03, which is being brought to Europe through a joint venture with Stellantis.

Other countries of origin for the subsidized vehicles include the Czech Republic (2979), South Korea (2305), Spain (1483), and Slovakia (1186). “All other countries fall in the three- or even two-digit range,” reports Automobilwoche.
