New electric and hybrid vehicle registrations in August 2026

In August, according to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 212,563 new passenger cars were registered. This represented a 2.6 percent increase compared to the previous month.

The number of new gasoline-powered cars dropped by 37.9 percent to 35,536 compared to the same period last year, accounting for 16.7 percent of total registrations. The share of diesel-powered cars in registration statistics was 10.6 percent, with 22,516 vehicles registered, following a 17.3 percent decline.

In terms of electrified vehicles, pure electric cars saw a 75.1 percent increase with 68,930 new registrations, accounting for 32.4 percent of the total. Additionally, 84,603 hybrid vehicles were registered (+2.5 %/39.8 %), including 25,406 plug-in hybrids (+6.0 %/12.0 %).

The average CO2 emissions dropped by 18.0 percent in August, reaching 86.0 g/km.
