Electric Porsche 718 Boxster with little camouflage left spotted

A new prototype of the all-new electric Porsche 718 Boxster was photographed during test drives on the Nürburgring in September 2026. This electric vehicle has significantly less camouflage than earlier test models; covers over the lighting areas remain visible, among other things. The photos document the ongoing testing of this battery-powered sports car. This sighting comes after months of uncertainty regarding the project’s future.

Media outlets reported this year, citing people familiar with the matter, that Porsche is considering stopping development of the planned new electric 718 models due to delays and rising costs. The company did not publicly comment on these reports at the time. This summer, Michael Leiters, who has been CEO since January, confirmed that the sports car brand will proceed with building the electric 718 models, citing the project’s profitability as the reason.

Porsche originally intended to launch the battery-electric successor to the Boxster and Cayman earlier. However, in its 2024 annual report, the manufacturer made it clear that these electric sports cars in the 718 segment were to be introduced only after the all-electric Cayenne. In September 2025, Porsche reaffirmed these future two-seater E-sports cars as part of its electric vehicle portfolio, despite the company simultaneously shifting its product strategy back toward a mix of electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engines.

Reliable series data for the new Boxster or the closed-door version of the new Cayman is still unavailable. Information regarding battery architecture, capacity, system voltage, engine power, drive configurations, range, charging speed, and price has not yet been officially confirmed. Media reports mention an 800-volt architecture and various drive configurations for these electric vehicles, but Porsche has not yet publicly verified these specifications for the production model.

For Porsche, the new 718 fills a gap that has existed in its model lineup. Production of the previous 718 Boxster and Cayman models with conventional internal combustion engines ended in October 2025, according to the company, largely due to new EU cybersecurity regulations. The decision to pursue a fully electric future stems from Porsche’s once highly ambitious electric vehicle strategy, which the Volkswagen subsidiary has since scaled back.

Some speculated that Porsche’s new CEO might cancel the fully electric 718 models given the weak demand for electric vehicles in the sports car and premium segment. However, this does not appear to be the case. It remains to be seen whether rumors of another generation of internal combustion engine versions for Porsche’s compact sports cars will come true.
