The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI breaks new ground with 50 years of history: 326 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, and 600 km of range
Volkswagen has been using the GTI acronym for half a century to identify some of its most recognizable compact cars, but it has never done anything like this before. The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTI not only abandons the gasoline engine but also becomes the first GTI in history with rear-wheel drive, and with 326 horsepower, it is the most powerful model produced in series by the brand.
The model we were able to see is still considered by Volkswagen as a vehicle close to production, but it is not yet available for purchase. That said, its key specifications are practically finalized. Its electric motor delivers 240 kW (326 horsepower) and 545 Nm of torque, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds with Launch Control, and reaches 200 km/h, with electronic speed limits in place. The expected range is up to 601 kilometers according to WLTP standards.
It won’t just be a more powerful ID.3. Taking advantage of the launch of the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, its design, interior, chassis, and software have been modified to bring some of the characteristics that have defined Golf GTIs for decades to this electric vehicle.
The first rear-wheel-drive GTI
The most significant technical change is under the hood. The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI uses the MEB+ platform and the APP550 powertrain system. A permanent magnet synchronous motor drives only the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. This is an unprecedented configuration in Volkswagen’s 50-year history of GTIs.
The battery has a net capacity of 79 kWh and supports a maximum fast charging power of 183 kW. Volkswagen estimates it can go from 10% to 80% charge in about 29 minutes. These figures, along with a range of 601 km, are still projected values before final approval.
With a length of 4.29 meters and a trunk space of 385 liters, it isn’t intended to be an impractical sports car either. The goal remains the traditional GTI concept: high performance within a vehicle suitable for daily use.
A GTI button changes the car’s character
A portion of that personality will be delivered through software. The steering wheel features a lit GTI button that activates a specific mode in addition to the Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual programs. Pressing it alters the engine response, the progressive steering, and the adaptive DCC chassis, which receives a unique tuning.
It also allows activation of Launch Control and transforms the interior atmosphere: the lighting turns red, the instrumentation changes, and even a sound mimicking a combustion engine appears while accelerating. For those with a nostalgic bent, there’s even a retro-style dashboard display inspired by the first-generation Golf GTI.
Volkswagen has also inspected the springs, shock absorbers, stabilizer bars, and front axle suspension components. It comes standard with 20-inch tires and variable steering, while DCC allows adjusting the driving behavior from comfortable to highly sporty.

Visually, it hasn’t stopped at just adding new badges. The iconic red stripe of the GTI appears on the light bar connecting the front headlights, reinterpreting the red frame of the grille from the first Golf GTI in 1976. It also features a lower air intake with a honeycomb structure, details inspired by racing rings, and a front splitter.
The new tires are named Wörthersee, referencing the historic Austrian GTI gathering, and one of the colors most associated with this series returns: Tornado Red.
Similar changes occur inside. The sport seats feature the traditional checkered pattern, now reinterpreted as Superclark, while a red strip runs across the dashboard.
There are also less sentimental but potentially more practical changes for everyday use: beneath the 12.9-inch central screen, there is a dedicated row of buttons for climate control, and the console includes a physical rotary knob to adjust volume and switch songs or stations.
It can even charge an electric bike
The GTI’s transformation doesn’t prevent Volkswagen from leveraging the advantages of an electric vehicle.
The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI features Vehicle-to-Load functionality, using an adapter connected to the charging port to power external devices. The brand provides a specific example: transporting two electric bikes in the bike rack and then using the car’s battery to charge them.
It will also introduce single-pedal driving and an upgraded version of Connected Travel Assist, which can detect a red light within its operational limits and brake the car until it stops.
After 50 years associating the GTI with gasoline engines and front-wheel drive, Volkswagen is preparing a much more profound change than simply replacing one engine with another. The challenge for the Volkswagen ID.3 GTI will be to prove that these three letters can still hold meaning when two of the elements that have seemed inseparable from them for decades are removed: the internal combustion engine and the front axle responsible for transmitting power.
