The Smart #2 is starting to reveal itself: new images of the successor to the legendary Fortwo
The Smart #2 begins to appear on the roads almost without any camouflage a month before its official launch. The fourth generation of this iconic two-seater urban vehicle, previously known as the Fortwo, will make its debut next October at the Paris Motor Show. As can be seen in the images, its design will be very similar to that of the Concept #2 prototype.
The new model will remain relatively consistent with the third-generation Fortwo, featuring a horizontally positioned hood (the first two generations were monocoque with the hood aligned with the windshield). It will also have a rectangular grille located at a relatively low position, another feature that closely resembles its predecessor.
The optical groups will be triangular, maintaining a family resemblance to other models in the range such as the Smart #1. The headlights, on the other hand, will have a teardrop shape. On the side profile, the floating C-pillar and the protective window stand out. Of course, the wheels will be located at the ends of the chassis, while the fenders will be minimal.
The Smart #2 will measure 2751 mm in length, 1669 mm in width, and 1555 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 1875 mm. Its curb weight will be 1130 kg, making it a very lightweight vehicle. According to information leaked from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, it will have an 82 HP (60 kW) engine that will allow it to reach a top speed of 140 km/h.
Smart #2 is expected to have a range of around 300 km
It will be equipped with a CATL-made LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) battery with a capacity of 35.7 kWh, sufficient to achieve around 300 km of range under the European WLTP testing cycle. Regarding charging, it is confirmed that it can go from 10% to 80% charge in less than 20 minutes, which is an excellent figure for an urban vehicle in the A segment.
The rear suspension will be a five-link multibrace system, with a turning radius of 6.95 meters. It can be equipped with 15 or 16 inch tires; additionally, the body kit can be customized with various options: two-tone roof, decorative elements on the bumpers and side skirts, and different grille designs... A convertible version may be added in the future.
Smart has also just confirmed that the #2 will feature a Sennheiser-designed sound system with 7 speakers, tailored specifically for its compact interior. Thanks to Sennheiser’s patented Contrabass algorithm, the brand promises audio quality typical of a higher-priced segment. “The return of the Smart two-seater goes beyond creating an excellent urban car. We want every journey in the Smart #2 to be special, from its agility in the city to its interior sound.
