The Renault 5 may have a new rival: the NIO Firefly will come equipped with a 60 kWh battery and an endurance of nearly 500 km.

Firefly is the entry-level brand from Chinese manufacturer Nio. It was created to compete in the entry-level segments already available in Europe, but its launch has not achieved the success expected by the parent company. It has strong advantages, with a highly recognizable design and an interior designed to make efficient use of space, yet it has been difficult to establish itself among established brands. Now, a new version with a larger battery might help it attract those looking for a small car that is also suitable for long trips.

The issue isn’t that it continues to wait for its arrival in the market. Nio’s smaller model began its European expansion in Norway and the Netherlands, but its commercial presence remains modest. For reference, according to available data, only 260 units were registered this year across all markets where it is sold. The Renault 5 has seen over 31,000 registrations.

There is also the issue of positioning. As Firefly’s executive told Reuters, European tariffs forced an increase in price compared to the initial plan and slowed down its expansion. This leaves the model competing with alternatives like the Renault 5 in a segment where price plays a major role, requiring a new brand to offer additional reasons to convince buyers.

The update will arrive on October 23, when a battery with higher capacity is set to be unveiled in China. In addition to being offered to new buyers, the brand has indicated that current owners will be able to access it through an update, though the details of those conditions remain unknown. Its arrival in Europe, however, has not yet had a confirmed date.

What the European Firefly offers and what might change with the new battery

The Firefly features a 4-meter-long body, 1.56 meters in height, and a wheelbase of 2.62 meters. The three-circle lighting setup gives it a distinct appearance, while the trunk capacity reaches 404 liters, supplemented by a front compartment holding up to 92 liters, along with a drainage system to facilitate cleaning.

Inside, we find five seats, a 13.2-inch central screen, and a 6-inch digital dashboard. The front layout allows easy movement from one side of the cabin to the other, which is useful when parking against a wall. The Dutch offering also includes a 14-speaker sound system, a feature it uses to justify its position above simpler urban models.

In Europe, the rear-mounted engine delivers 105 kW (143 hp) and enables acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds. It should be distinguished from the Chinese configuration mentioned in the information on the new version, which has 122 kW (166 hp); this power figure is not confirmed for our market. The European version uses a 42.1 kWh LFP battery and achieves 330 km of WLTP range, with a combined fuel consumption of 14.5 kWh/100 km.

The future alternative features a 60 kWh CATL battery and claims 560 km of CLTC range; according to our estimates, it might achieve around 490 km of WLTP range, though this is an approximate figure rather than an official European certification. This additional range could enhance its appeal for those who need to travel frequently outside the city and want to use it as their primary vehicle.

For charging, the model currently on the market supports up to 11 kW (15 hp) on alternating current and 100 kW (136 hp) on direct current, with an advertised time of 29 minutes to go from 10% to 80%. It also features V2L for powering external devices. The charging performance of the new battery remains unknown, which is an important factor in assessing how much its range will improve.

The current price listed on the official Dutch website starts at 29,900 euros. This is a market-aligned figure, and we will see how it changes if the new battery arrives. If they lower the price of the base model and set the 60 kWh version at that same price, it will undoubtedly be a much more competitive product that raises the bar for competitors.
