A week of daily driving without needing to plug in. That’s the promise from Dongfeng-Nissan, the Chinese joint venture, for its new plug-in hybrid SUV, the Nissan NX7. The brand has already announced it’s coming soon with a poster showcasing it as “a smart and stress-free SUV for young people.” Some describe it as the Cayenne for millennials due to its resemblance to the German electric SUV.

There is still no release date, but this is the final step before it reaches dealerships. The first official images appeared in early August, and now the NX7 is set to become the fourth model in Nissan’s N series — the electrified lineup the company has created for the Chinese market. Like other manufacturers, Nissan is considering exporting its Chinese models to other regions of the world.

A mid-size SUV designed for young families

The NX7 is currently the smallest SUV in the family. It measures 4,785 millimeters in length, 1,932 millimeters in width, and 1,665 millimeters in height, with a wheelbase of 2,815 millimeters. It has five seats, and the brand highlights its efficient use of space along with comfortable seating for both front and rear passengers.

It sits one tier below the Nissan NX8, which is 4,870 millimeters long and has a wheelbase of 2,917 millimeters. In other words, it is about 9 centimeters shorter in length and 10 centimeters shorter in wheelbase. Recently, Dongfeng and Nissan have updated their most successful model to date, the Nissan N7. This sedan has been a huge success, consistently selling over 10,000 units per month.

Hybrid with 231 HP and CATL battery

According to the official documentation submitted by the regulatory body, the NX7 combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor producing a maximum power of 231 horsepower (170 kW). The internal combustion engine alone delivers 99 horsepower (73 kW). With its EREV (Extended Range Electric) system, the combustion engine never acts as the primary driver; its role is to charge the battery.

The battery is from CATL and has a capacity of 40.9 kWh, a high figure for an plug-in hybrid. With this battery, the NX7 achieves 220 or 225 kilometers of all-electric range (CLTC), depending on the version. The chemistry used is lithium iron phosphate (LFP), which is cheaper and more durable. Although there are no official figures yet, its combined range is expected to easily exceed 1,200 kilometers (CLTC).

Price: lower than the NX8

Nissan has not announced prices yet, but it is likely the NX7 will cost less than the NX8. The latter, launched on April 8, ranges from 159,900 to 209,900 yuan (approximately 20,800 to 27,300 euros). With temporary promotions, it starts at 149,900 yuan, around 19,500 euros. As with its first two models, Dongfeng-Nissan aims to attract a large number of buyers. Young drivers have become one of the key market segments in the country. If the NX7 achieves the expected success, it may be introduced to other regions around the world in the future. No specific plans exist for Europe yet.
