MG is developing a new electric car approximately four meters long, aiming to compete directly with the Renault 5 and the electric Mini Cooper. This model, previewed by the MG GO! prototype and temporarily known as MG2, will hit the market in 2027. According to latest reports, production is set to begin in Spain by the end of 2028. The manufacturing will take place at SAIC Motor’s future plant in Ferrol, Galicia, making this compact SUV one of the first products to feature the Chinese manufacturer’s expansion into European industry.

MG aims to compete with the Renault 5 and electric Mini

The new utility vehicle will represent a significant change in MG’s business strategy. While the brand has achieved much of its growth in Europe by offering vehicles with a competitive price-to-specs ratio, it now aims to attract buyers who prioritize design as well.

The MG GO! Concept, unveiled in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, previews a five-door car with a length of approximately four meters.

Its aesthetic features rounded headlights, wide wheelbases, and sporty proportions. The design comes from MG’s London studio, where efforts have been made to revive elements from historic models such as the MGB GT.

Jozef Kaban, MG’s design lead, explained during his presentation that the prototype accurately reflects the future production vehicle.

The goal is to offer a small electric car with its own distinct character, capable of competing with well-known models such as the Renault 5 and the electric Mini Cooper.

Spain to manufacture the new electric car starting in late 2028

The major innovation lies in its industrialization. According to Autocar, citing sources familiar with SAIC’s plans, the new model will be assembled at the group’s future factory in Spain beginning in 2028.

The information matches what was previously reported by La Tribuna de Automoción, which states that production will take place at the Puerto Exterior de Ferrol, with an estimated annual output of around 73,000 units.

The industrial project initially involves assembling vehicles using kits from China, with the possibility of adding other production processes gradually. Before starting manufacturing in Spain, the new MG will be available on the market in 2027 via units produced in China.

The brand has not yet publicly confirmed the final decision to locate production in Ferrol, so the industrial timeline should be considered an estimate based on industry reports.

A car designed for Europe, but with no price confirmed yet

MG aims to give its new SUV a distinctly European character. Its British-inspired design and compact size cater to the preferences of markets where small cars still hold significant importance.

The manufacturer has not yet announced the final technical specifications, battery capacity, or certified range. There is also no official price for Spain, though the model is expected to be competitively priced against its rivals.

If production takes place in Ferrol, MG will combine British design, Chinese technology, and Spanish assembly. This approach reflects the transformation of this historic British brand and could make Galicia a key part of its expansion in Europe.
