The new Geely E5 makes a huge leap forward: more power, longer range, and 800 V.

The new Geely E5 makes a huge leap forward: more power, longer range, and 800 V.

Geely is preparing a major update for the Galaxy E5, the compact electric SUV already available in Europe. The refresh retains much of the current design but introduces far more substantial changes to the technical aspects, featuring a new rear-wheel drive system, an 800-volt architecture, fast charging capabilities, and a driving assistance system.

The unveiling and launch of the new model in China are scheduled for September 23rd, so some key details about its final configuration remain unknown. However, what Geely has already shown gives us a pretty clear idea of what to expect in this evolution of one of its most important models.

Auxeriorly, the new Geely E5 retains the overall design of the current model, featuring a completely closed front end and narrow headlamps. The main difference lies in the front bumper, which now has a more elaborate design with new decorative elements and an underside that enhances its sporty appearance. The integrated door handles are also gone, replaced by conventional ones, while the tires adopt a new multi-spoke design.

The major visual change is on the roof, where a LiDAR sensor appears along with new cameras on the front fenders and in the upper rear area. This setup suggests the inclusion of Geely’s H5 driving assistance system. On the rear, the horizontal strip running along the trunk remains, though Geely’s name is now displayed below it.

The external dimensions show slight but noticeable growth. The new E5 measures 4.64 meters in length, 1.92 meters in width, and 1.67 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. Compared to the current model, it has increased in length and width, though it retains very similar proportions. There is also an important practical update: the new mechanical configuration allows for a front trunk, which was absent in the current E5.

Inside, Geely retains the overall layout of the current E5, featuring a large central floating screen and a digital dashboard. The steering wheel adopts a three-spoke design, and the center console includes a new rotary control with a glass-like finish. A windshield projection system is also added, along with wireless phone charging and FLYME SOUND audio equipment in higher trims.

But it is under the chassis where we find the most significant change. The new Geely E5 abandons the 160 kW front engine from the current model in favor of a single 245 kW rear electric motor, delivering around 333 horsepower. This represents an additional 85 kW compared to the E5 we already know in Europe, and moreover, the shift from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive entails a considerable modification to its dynamic handling.

The electrical system also sees a major upgrade. The new E5 is built around an 800-volt architecture, incorporates Geely’s intelligent 16-element propulsion system, and features the new generation of Blade-type ShenDun batteries.

The final battery capacity and the vehicle’s homologation figures for all versions in Europe have not yet been confirmed. In China, data of 61.52 and 70.01 kWh have been released, corresponding to ranges of 550 and 635 kilometers under the CLTC cycle. Using the standard conversion for this cycle, we would be talking about approximately 478 and 552 kilometers WLTP, though these figures should be considered provisional until the European homologation is known.

When it comes to charging, this is precisely one of the areas where the new E5 can make a significant difference compared to the model already available in Europe. The combination of 800 V, a new-generation battery, and up to 6C charging capacity suggests very fast charging times, although the exact charging curve has not yet been confirmed. Some information from China suggests it may recover over 80% of the battery in about ten minutes under optimal conditions, but we will have to wait for official data and actual testing results.

And here arises a particularly interesting issue for Europe. The Geely E5 is already available in Spain, where its Pro version starts at 37,490 euros and the Max+ variant goes up to 41,990 euros. These are prices before any subsidies or promotions. The Spanish lineup offers 218 horsepower, batteries with capacities of 60.2 and 68.4 kWh, and a range of up to 475 kilometers according to WLTP standards.

If Geely maintains a similar pricing strategy, the new E5 could retail in Spain for around 38,000 to 43,000 euros before any promotions or potential subsidies. This is an estimate rather than an official price, but it gives an idea of its likely positioning relative to the current E5. A combination of 245 kW, rear-wheel drive, 800 V charging, and LiDAR would represent a significant leap without needing to move far from the prices already seen for this model in our market.

On September 23, we will have clarity on the price and all other final specifications. What is clear is that Geely didn’t just give the E5 a minor facelift: it used this renewal to replace much of the technology beneath its chassis.
