Volkswagen aims to regain ground in China’s new energy vehicle market, and it does so with a very specific weapon: price. The joint venture FAW-Volkswagen has launched pre-orders for the Jetta M6, a mid-size electric sedan starting at 80,800 yuan, which is approximately 10,504 euros at current exchange rates. Volkswagen and FAW price it about 5,810 dollars lower than the Xpeng Mona M03, one of its direct competitors in this segment. It is also much cheaper than the Tesla Model 3.
The launch also marks a turning point for the Jetta brand, founded in 2019 under FAW-Volkswagen. Until now it has focused exclusively on producing internal combustion engine models for the Chinese domestic market, but this year it has begun exporting to some Central Asian markets and started its transition toward new energy vehicles. The M6 is the brand’s first mass-produced electric car.
A sedan nearly 4.81 meters long with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm
The Jetta M6 is a mid-size sedan that measures 4,806 mm in length, 1,868 mm in width, and 1,895 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm. These dimensions make it 68 mm longer than the regular Volkswagen Jetta. It is available in six body colors: blue, purple, silver, white, black, and gold. The base models come equipped with 17-inch tires. Standard features include intelligent cruise control, automatic parking assist, and a surround-view camera system with transparent chassis functionality.
The range comes in three finishes. The Jetta M6 465 Pro starts at 80,800 yuan (10,504 euros), the 555 Max costs 90,800 yuan (11,804 euros), and the 555 Ultra, the most complete version, reaches 99,800 yuan (12,974 euros). The top-tier models include a panoramic roof, heated and ventilated front seats with electric adjustment, and a wireless phone charger.
Models for every taste
The Jetta M6 465 Pro is equipped with a 42.9 kWh battery that provides 465 km of range under the CLTC cycle. Its electric motor delivers 113 kW, equivalent to about 154 horsepower, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds. It has a power consumption of 10.5 kWh per 100 kilometers (CLTC). The Max and Ultra variants offer improved performance. Both use a 51.9 kWh battery that provides 555 km of CLTC range, along with an electric motor of 145 kW, roughly 197 horsepower. Their officially recorded power consumption is 10.7 kWh/100 km (CLTC).
The interior follows the style of Chinese sedans, featuring a 15.6-inch central screen, an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster, and a few physical controls as standard. It is available in three color combinations: gray, white, and purple. The Ultra version adds a level 2 driver assistance system with navigation on autopilot (NOA) in urban areas and highways, front seats with massage and lumbar support functions, 256-color ambient lighting, and illuminated door handles.
A launch aimed at gaining market share in new energy vehicles
The Jetta M6 will soon arrive in the Chinese domestic market with a clear goal: to increase Volkswagen’s market share in the new energy vehicle segment. With an entry price below 10,600 euros and a range of up to 555 km, the brand aims to offer a combination of affordable pricing and solid features to compete with local electric vehicles. The M6 is the cheapest electric vehicle Volkswagen has launched in its most recent series, alongside models like the ID. Aura T6, as well as the ID. UNYX 08 and ID. UNYX 09 developed in partnership with XPeng. The Germans are considering exporting several of these models to Europe.
