JLR and Chinese manufacturer Chery have revived the Freelander name for a new premium vehicle brand, with the Freelander 8 being its first major model. It is a 5.1-meter-long SUV that features a plug-in hybrid engine delivering up to 620 horsepower, a 34 kWh battery, and an announced electric range of 110 kilometers. Additionally, it offers six seats, a huge 46.3-inch panoramic screen, and technologies designed for off-road use. The brand has international ambitions, and its arrival in Europe is guaranteed.
A Freelander very different from the one we knew
The name Freelander returns to the automotive scene, but it does so with a completely different approach from the SUV Land Rover has sold for years. It now represents a new premium brand developed jointly by JLR and the Chinese company Chery, which unveiled the features of its first strategic model at the Chery International User Summit held in Wuhu, China.

The Freelander 8 is 5.1 meters long, 2.1 meters wide, and 1.9 meters tall. Its dimensions place it among the large SUVs, featuring a British-inspired design and an approach aimed at combining luxury, technology, and true off-road capabilities.
Up to 620 HP and 110 kilometers in electric mode
The top version features a plug-in hybrid system (PHEV) consisting of a 2.0 turbo gasoline engine, all-wheel drive, and a 34 kWh LFP battery.
The combination delivers 620 HP and 662 Nm of torque, enough to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. According to the company’s preliminary figures, it can travel up to 110 kilometers using only electricity and achieve a combined range of 886 kilometers.

It also supports fast DC charging, with less than 20 minutes required to restore 20% to 80% of the battery charge.
These figures correspond to international configurations and are still pending approval for various markets, including Europe.
A 46.3-inch screen and space for six adults
In the cabin, technology plays a prominent role. The Surround View Gallery system features a 46.3-inch panoramic screen with 8K resolution, stretching over 1.2 meters along the dashboard.
It is complemented by a 15.6-inch central screen, a Qualcomm SA8295P processor, and optionally another 17.3-inch rear screen.

The interior has six seats, with raised front seats, a second row that can accommodate zero-gravity seats, and a third row designed to transport adults. The equipment includes up to 23 Harman Kardon speakers.
Off-road technology with an upcoming European launch
The Freelander 8 also features over 30 driving assistants, L2+ level functions, and automated parking systems under certain conditions.
For off-road use, it has the i-ATS system with nine driving modes, a dual-chamber air suspension, and up to 266 millimeters of ground clearance.
For now, JLR and Chery have not confirmed the prices, final versions, or when it might arrive in Europe. The brand will provide more information in the coming months. International launches will begin in the United Arab Emirates during the first quarter of 2027.
