The Luxeed RX begins deliveries: 852 km of range and Level 3 autonomous driving

The Luxeed RX is already in the hands of its first customers. Deliveries began on October 25, following its commercial launch in September, and its main selling point goes far beyond offering long range or sporty acceleration. Huawei and Chery’s strategy is to equip this car for a leap that will transform the relationship between driver and vehicle: Level 3 autonomous driving. This represents a significant advancement over current Level 2 systems such as Tesla’s FSD or Xpeng’s NGP.

An architecture prepared for the leap to Level 3

The difference between the two approaches is significant. With level 2 assistance, the car can control steering, acceleration, and braking, but the driver still needs to continuously monitor what’s happening. At level 3, under permitted conditions, the system handles driving tasks while the user must be ready to take over when requested. This does not mean one can ignore the car on any road or under any circumstances.

To achieve this goal, the relevant versions of the RX feature four LiDAR sensors and a total of 38 perception sensors. This setup allows monitoring the environment through various information sources, but the solution goes beyond simply adding more sensors to the vehicle’s exterior. It also includes components necessary to ensure the car can continue functioning in the event of certain failures.

Huawei announces redundancies in eight areas: perception, calculation, braking, steering, communications, power supply, positioning, and interaction. Simply put, this means having backup systems for essential functions. This technical foundation is one of the main strengths of the RX and explains why its development toward Level 3 deserves more attention than other features like parking assistance or a larger screen.

Official documentation still describes the ADS 5 as a tool that does not replace the driver’s attention or judgment. Therefore, what is entering the market is this technical preparation, not an overall permission to stop monitoring the road. There is also insufficient basis to label it as the first car in its class with a level 3 system already available to its owners.

The rest of the specifications are equally impressive. The RX is a large SUV with an exceptionally low profile: it measures 5.02 meters in length and 2.007 meters in width, with a wheelbase of 3 meters. The height varies depending on the version, ranging from 1.585 to 1.60 meters. Its proportions make it more akin to a sporty luxury sedan than a conventional off-roader.

Beneath that bodyshell lies an 800 V platform, with rear-wheel-drive versions and alternatives featuring two engines and all-wheel drive. The rear engine delivers 277 kW (377 hp), while the two-engine variants add a front engine producing 160 kW (218 hp). The all-wheel-drive version boasts a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of just 3.6 seconds, a remarkable figure for a car of this size.

The range offers a 81 kWh pack with LFP chemistry and another 100 kWh pack with ternary chemistry. The maximum range claimed is 852 km on the CLTC cycle, which should not be confused with a WLTP rating or actual highway range. For charging, the brand states a time of 15 minutes to go from 30% to 80%, a range different from the typical 10%-80% used in many European comparisons.

The chassis features a double triangle front suspension and a five-link rear suspension. Higher trims add a dual-chamber air suspension with variable stiffness dampers, while the front brakes use fixed six-piston calipers. On paper, these components are designed to achieve a good balance between comfort and precision; determining how well they work together requires getting behind the wheel.

Inside, one of the most distinctive features are the seats, which use 98 sensors and 27 air chambers to adjust support based on the occupant and driving conditions. There is also a 16.1-inch tiltable central screen, another 8.88-inch screen for the passenger, and information projected on the windshield. Depending on the configuration, ventilation, heating, massage functions, and a refrigerator are added.

For European readers, the big question is when it will be available here and with what features. The arrival of the Luxeed RX in Europe by 2027 is not confirmed in the sources consulted. The information available on Luxeed’s international expansion does not clarify which models will be introduced, nor whether their driving systems will offer the same capabilities as those in China.

In its home market, the prices are approximately equivalent to between 34,800 and 52,200 euros at the current exchange rate. The versions announced with a level 3-ready architecture start at around 42,800 euros at the exchange rate.

It remains to be seen whether Chery will launch this model in Europe, where rumors suggest it will appear in 2027 as one of China’s flagship technological models in the global market.
