The Citroën 2CV begins to evolve: the brand unveils a new prototype with some changes

We have already seen the Citroën 2CV Concept in three colors (four if we include its van version, painted in a gray shade similar to that of the 1950s AZU models). Although the unit displayed at the Paris Motor Show was painted in a striking Infrared red with some orange accents, the brand also released a series of images of a 1:1 scale model painted yellow.

Now, the chevron brand has surprised everyone by showing a new version of the prototype at the GNAC national convention, the National Group of Citroën and DS Agents. This time it is a green-colored version with some changes compared to the Paris model. The body seems to be painted in a shade similar to Fiat Topolino’s Verde Vita color.

In any case, the 450 dealers present at the convention had the opportunity to get a closer look at the vehicle, which lacked the canvas roof seen in the Paris concept; instead, this green model features a solid black roof. The tires also do not display the classic Michelin logo but have a more conventional appearance; furthermore, the door handles are not chrome-plated but match the color of the rest of the body. The wheels, on the other hand, are white.

It’s interesting to note that from its introduction in 1948 until 1959, the original Citroën 2CV was only available in gray. This apparently won’t be the case with its successor, as the variety of colors seen in the prototypes suggests a rich and eye-catching color palette that will recall the 2CVs of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s—much more vibrant than the models from the 1950s.

The ultimate Citroën 2CV will undergo some changes compared to the prototype

Citroën claims that the design of the 2CV Concept is 90% identical to that of the final model, which will be launched in 2028 with a target price of 15,000 euros. The documentary “La légende revient,” released by Amazon Prime to coincide with the launch of the prototype, shows what appears to be a clay model with a design much closer to production.

Among other changes, the hood is wider with less pronounced ribs, while the fenders are less exaggerated in shape. The lighting units still aren’t integrated into the body, but they have been moved to the edges. The door handles are more conventional compared to those on the concept car; additionally, the windshield is more curved and the wipers are concealed at its base.

The platform for the new Citroën 2CV is being developed by Stellantis in collaboration with Leapmotor. This cost-effective electric architecture will also power the upcoming FIAT Koala and Leapmotor T03, as well as an urban vehicle from Opel that will arrive later. Initially, all of these vehicles will be manufactured at the Pomigliano d'Arco plant (Naples, Italy).
