The BYD Seal U electric vehicle is set for an update: integrated Google and improved charging capabilities

The BYD Seal U is set to receive an essential update that could improve two aspects of a model facing increasing competition in its segment. The new version will see enhancements in areas such as the multimedia system and charging capabilities.

This refresh is designed to make the Seal U more competitive. For Spanish buyers, it will be important to see how much its range improves and what technologies it ultimately incorporates, in addition to any design changes.

For now, it’s necessary to distinguish between the features announced for the European version and those of the Chinese BYD Song Ultra EV, which the media cites as a reference for this evolution. Its specifications give an idea of the brand’s potential, but they do not constitute an official specification sheet for the upcoming Seal U.

Externally, modest changes are expected, focusing on headlights, tires, and colors. It would remain a family SUV with no radical transformation to its appearance.

Internally, a more noticeable update might arrive: the removal of the rotary center screen and the inclusion of integrated Google services. According to reports from Chinese media, BYD will opt for a fixed screen and a multimedia experience similar to its latest European models.

For users, the key concern will be how navigation, apps, and vehicle functions are integrated. Simply adding services isn’t enough—in an electric vehicle, it’s particularly useful for the navigation system and charging information to work together seamlessly. We’ll have to wait for the launch to learn about the specific features of the new system.

The biggest unknowns lie in the battery and charging speed

The update also aims to bring changes to the battery and fast charging. Rumors suggest the possible adoption of the second-generation Blade Battery, but no confirmed WLTP-rated capacity or range has been disclosed for the Spanish version yet.

The Seal U is expected to leap to 800V. This will enable the new model to utilize more powerful charging stations to restore range more quickly during longer trips—a crucial feature for a vehicle of this type.

According to the figures from the Chinese model, whose applicability to the European version remains to be confirmed, the Seal U can go from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes, and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes.

The Song Ultra EV sold in China provides some clues about the available technology. According to the reference text, it is 4.85 meters long, 1.91 meters wide, and 1.67 meters high, with a wheelbase of 2.84 meters. It is equipped with a rear motor producing 270 kW — 367 horsepower.

It cannot be assumed that all of its features will be included here. The Chinese model features elements such as the DiSus-C body control system and seats with ventilation, heating, and massage functions, but the European version might differ.

The meeting on November 19 should clarify what improvements the electric Seal U will actually receive. Until then, its price, WLTP range, charging performance, and delivery schedule in Spain remain the missing pieces to determine whether it is worth waiting for.
