The BMW iX7 is being developed at Nürburgring: a sports and family-oriented electric SUV

BMW continues to advance in the development of its future large electric SUV. The iX7 has reappeared camouflaged, this time driving on the Nürburgring, where the brand continues to refine its performance and test its durability. Although the exterior shows few changes compared to earlier prototypes, these images provide a better insight into the strategy the German manufacturer is using to electrify its most popular model line.

The BMW iX7 is expected to be unveiled in 2027, and one of its unique features will be found beneath the bodyshell. According to the information released so far, it will use the CLAR platform rather than Neue Klasse’s dedicated electric vehicle architecture. This decision allows it to share a common base with the X7’s gasoline-powered versions, though it doesn’t mean it will be left behind in terms of BMW’s technological advancements.

On the outside, the prototype retains the two-level headlights, a design choice that maintains visual continuity with the X7 and Series 7. As a result, its front end will have a distinct personality from the new iX3 without fully adopting its design. The camouflage still prevents clear visibility of the details, and the vehicle’s final dimensions have not yet been disclosed.

The vehicle is expected to feature body surfaces inspired by the design language of BMW’s new models, along with hidden door handles and electric actuators that will replace the traditional ones. Thus, the transformation will be more selective than its name might suggest: it will retain some of the characteristics of the brand’s larger models while incorporating solutions from its new generation.

Inside, reports suggest the arrival of the latest generation of BMW’s driving controls and digital systems. It remains to be seen how this technology will be integrated into the cabin and what standard equipment will be offered. The vehicle is expected to be a luxury SUV with three rows of seats, where comfort and space will play just as important a role as performance.

For propulsion, the iX7 is expected to share components with the iX5. One of the configurations under consideration combines two motors and around 600 horsepower, with all-wheel drive. A higher-performance variant labeled M may also be introduced later, though neither the final lineup nor acceleration figures have been officially announced.

The battery is another aspect yet to be finalized. Preliminary information suggests a capacity of over 110 kWh, but the confirmed WLTP range has not been released yet. A battery pack of that size would allow for long-distance travel, though actual consumption will be needed to assess performance: in an SUV of these characteristics, capacity alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

The power output and charging times, which are crucial for assessing its usefulness on the road, remain unknown. Interest will likely focus on determining how much of BMW’s new electric technology this model incorporates thanks to its shared platform with fuel-powered versions. No prices have been announced yet, so we will need to wait for its launch to find out where it fits within the brand’s electric lineup.
