Ford Fathom E-Pickup under $30,000 in the US

The first series model based on the new Universal EV Platform is called the Ford Fathom. This mid-size electric pickup is expected to hit the market in 2027 and will be available for just under $30,000. For Ford, this model is much more than just a new electric vehicle: the Fathom aims to demonstrate that electric cars with a significantly simplified vehicle and production architecture can be built at a much lower cost.

Ford has revealed the name of its first model based on the new Universal EV Platform (UEV). The four-door electric pickup will be called the Ford Fathom and is expected to hit the market in 2027. Ford lists a starting price of $28,350 for the standard range version. Including the mandatory $1,595 delivery fee in the U.S., the total cost will be at least $29,945 — all before taxes and registration fees.

Even with the delivery fee, Ford stays just below the $30,000 mark that the manufacturer set as a goal when introducing its new electric vehicle platform last year.

The Fathom is much more than just another electric vehicle for Ford. It represents the first production model based on a completely new electric vehicle architecture, one that the U.S. manufacturer aims to use to significantly reduce the costs of its future electric cars. Ford also referred to the Universal EV Platform when it was introduced in August 2025 as a sort of new “Model T moment” for this reason.

Now, the platform holds even greater strategic importance. After shifting its focus toward electric vehicles, Ford is concentrating the development of new all-electric models in North America on the Universal EV Platform, targeting smaller and more affordable vehicles. Previous projects for larger electric pickups have been halted. Thus, the Fathom becomes the first major production model under Ford’s newly oriented electric vehicle strategy.

LFP Battery Aimed at Reducing Costs and Weight

The base version of the Fathom will feature an LFP battery. The prismatic cells come from BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, where Ford has already begun pilot production. Full-scale manufacturing is set to start there by 2026. These LFP cells contain no nickel or cobalt.

In the Fathom, the battery pack is integrated into the vehicle floor as a structural component. This allows Ford to eliminate additional parts while simultaneously reducing weight and costs. Overall, Ford’s strategy for the Universal EV Platform is to achieve desired range primarily through efficiency rather than relying on overly large batteries. The manufacturer has stated that it aims to function with significantly smaller batteries compared to similar electric vehicles.

When introducing the platform, the manufacturer listed several design measures intended to reduce weight and costs. Compared to a conventionally developed vehicle, the Universal EV Platform is expected to use about 20 percent fewer components and 25 percent fewer connecting elements.

Ford also makes significant savings in terms of wiring harnesses: the first UEV model is planned to have a wiring harness that is roughly 1.3 kilometers shorter and 10 kilograms lighter than that of Ford’s first generation electric vehicle. A new zonal electronics architecture consolidates numerous functions into a few central modules.

The actual size of the Fathom’s battery is still unknown. Ford has also not yet released specific figures regarding EPA range or maximum charging capacity.

Five seats, frunk, and bidirectional power output

The low price should not come at the expense of a particularly spartan vehicle. The Fathom offers space for five adults and is said by Ford to provide more passenger volume than the popular Toyota RAV4 in the U.S. In addition, it features a cargo area and an extra frunk under the front hood.

Ford also confirms a large high-resolution touchscreen, a digital key, and bidirectional power delivery. Even when introducing the platform, the manufacturer promised both powering external devices and using the vehicle as a backup power source for a home.

This indicates the inclusion of V2L or V2H applications. Whether the Fathom will also support grid-connected bidirectional charging, as in Vehicle-to-Grid, has not yet been confirmed by Ford.

All Fathoms are also set to be hardware-ready for the next generation of the BlueCruise assistance system. Apple Maps will be integrated directly into the vehicle software, handling functions such as real-time traffic information, EV route planning, and battery preconditioning. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will also remain available.

New Production Principle Instead of Traditional Assembly Line

At least as important as the vehicle technology is Ford’s new production method. The Fathom will be manufactured at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, USA. Ford is investing around two billion dollars there to transform the factory. An additional three billion dollars will go into the BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan. In total, approximately five billion dollars are being invested in this new electric vehicle program.

Ford relies on a so-called “Assembly Tree” rather than relying solely on traditional linear final assembly. The front, rear, and middle sections of the vehicle, including the structural battery, are pre-assembled in parallel before being combined later. Large aluminum cast parts replace numerous smaller components. Thus, Ford has learned from Tesla. This approach reduces the need for approximately 40 percent fewer assembly stations. The actual assembly process is expected to be much faster; overall, Ford anticipates a production time reduction of around 15 percent despite additional steps for automation and quality control.

It is this combination of a simplified vehicle design, reduced number of parts, and reorganized production process that aims to bring the Fathom into an unusually low price range of around $30,000 for electric vehicles.

The name “Fathom” refers in English, among other things, to a nautical length measure of six feet, or about 1.83 meters. The verb “to fathom” also means to fully comprehend or understand something. Ford aims to convey with this name that the development team has carefully considered the needs of its target customers.

Ford Fathom’s European launch not yet confirmed

The Fathom is scheduled to go into production at the Louisville plant in 2027 and is intended for both the U.S. market and export markets. The manufacturer has not yet specified which countries outside the U.S. Ford plans to supply. A launch in Germany or other European countries has not been confirmed at this time.

The Fathom remains interesting for the European market. It will be the first to show whether Ford’s new platform, battery, and production strategy can indeed make electric vehicles significantly cheaper. If this concept succeeds, the Universal EV Platform could become the technical foundation for an entire range of cheaper electric vehicles.
