German Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider currently believes that subsidies for purchasing electric cars will still be available next year as well. Nevertheless, potential buyers feel pressured by time constraints. This is evident from a Carwow survey conducted among users of the popular car comparison website and marketplace at the end of October.

According to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, a total of three billion euros are available for the electric car purchase subsidy from 2026 to 2029. As of October 1, 2026, 432 million euros have been disbursed, according to the Federal Agency for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA). Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider announced that he would provide early updates once it becomes clear when the subsidy funds are likely to be exhausted.

Among those surveyed who are considering a pure electric vehicle and are aware of the subsidy, 39 percent feel pressured to make a purchase soon due to the potential depletion of the funds. 49 percent feel no pressure. 10 percent say they definitely feel pressured.

39 percent of respondents who are aware of the subsidies are very or fairly concerned that the funding might run out soon. 37 percent are little or not at all concerned, while 24 percent cannot assess their level of concern. The worry about an imminent end to the subsidies varies depending on individual knowledge levels: among the 467 respondents who consider themselves well-informed, 35 percent are very or fairly concerned. Among the 281 respondents with little knowledge of the details, that figure is 46 percent.

“The commitment from Berlin provides some guidance. However, for car buyers, it matters whether subsidies are still available at the time of purchase and what conditions apply,” says Philipp Sayler of Amende, CEO of Carwow Deutschland.
