Two in one: Volkswagen says goodbye to ID.4 and ID.5. They will be replaced by the electric Tiguan

Volkswagen has confirmed the name for its next electric SUV. The ID. Tiguan will be another model where the manufacturer combines the naming convention of the electric ID. family with a name long associated with gasoline-powered vehicles.

The world premiere of this car will take place in early October 2026, with sales set to begin in early 2027. Until its debut, Volkswagen will continue showing prototypes under camouflage.

ID.4 and ID.5 are going into history

The ID. Tiguan will be the direct successor to the two models – ID.4 and ID.5. The former was one of the most important models in Volkswagen’s first-generation electric lineup. The ID.4 was unveiled in September 2020 as the brand’s first all-electric SUV and the second model after the ID.3 built on the MEB platform. The first units were delivered to customers in Europe in March 2021.

A year later, the ID.5 joined it. It was structurally closely related to the ID.4, but it featured a SUV coupe body with a more pronounced sloping roofline. Volkswagen presented it at the time as the first electric SUV coupe in its lineup.

Both vehicles underwent significant technical upgrades later on. In 2023, they received a new powertrain known from the ID.7, and in the Pro versions, the output of the rear engine increased to 286 HP. The GTX variants, on the other hand, achieved 340 HP.

At the same time, newer multimedia systems, illuminated sliders under the screen, and faster DC charging were introduced.

Now their story is coming to an end. According to Volkswagen, over 950,000 ID.4 and ID.5 units have been delivered worldwide since 2021. This means the manufacturer is not giving up on the entire segment, but rather on the current names and generation of vehicles.

The two models will be replaced by one ID. Tiguan

In an official statement, Volkswagen explicitly states that the ID. Tiguan will take over the role of both the ID.4 and ID.5. So far, the manufacturer has not revealed the full technical specifications of the new vehicle nor a detailed lineup of its variants.

It is still unknown whether, alongside the traditional SUV, a more aerodynamic version corresponding to the current ID.5 will appear again. In its announcement, Volkswagen simply refers to one new ID. Tiguan.

The manufacturer reveals that the car will feature a completely new design style, aiming to give it an appearance consistent with a higher-end vehicle. More details regarding batteries, power, range, and charging should be unveiled during the October launch.

This change does not mean the end of the regular Tiguan either. Both vehicles will be offered simultaneously. The classic Tiguan will remain available with both combustion engine and electrified powertrains, while the ID. Tiguan will serve as its electric counterpart.

ID.4 and ID.5 are still available for purchase in Poland

For now, both outgoing models remain available in the Polish market as well. The ID.4 is offered with batteries having capacities of 58, 77, and 79 kWh, along with rear-wheel drive or 4MOTION. The current Polish price list features versions ranging from 190 to 340 horsepower. Under the current special offers, prices start at 127,490 PLN.

ID.5 is also still available in the Polish lineup. The base Pure version has a 58 kWh battery and 190 horsepower, with the special price currently starting at 133,690 PLN. Volkswagen claims a range of up to 575 km for the available ID.5 versions. The ID. Tiguan will therefore succeed models that remain an important part of the brand’s electric lineup at the time of its launch, rather than models that were withdrawn from the market several years earlier.

Volkswagen returns to names customers already know

The ID. Tiguan is part of a larger transformation at Volkswagen. Initially, the manufacturer created a separate family for electric vehicles labeled with the ID. prefix followed by numbers. The first model was the ID.3, with subsequent models including the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7.

In September 2025, Volkswagen officially announced a new naming strategy. The company decided that future electric vehicles would also adopt names from its long-standing gasoline-powered models. The first to be announced was the ID. Polo, followed by the ID. Cross.

The ID. Tiguan will be the third major step in this direction. Volkswagen does not hide its intention to make it easier for customers to navigate its lineup. Instead of wondering which classic Volkswagen model the ID.4 corresponds to, customers will simply have the Tiguan and the electric ID. Tiguan as options.

This is also a return to one of the strongest names in the manufacturer’s lineup. The Tiguan is currently the best-selling model both for Volkswagen and the entire Volkswagen Group. Last year alone, the Tiguan and its related model, the Tayron, combined to attract over a million buyers. The total production of the Tiguan since its inception has already exceeded 8.3 million units.
