The TeslaAndroid.com domain has stopped working. Its owner once unofficially activated FSD (Supervised).

Tesla Android was a hardware platform that allowed Android to run within the software on Tesla’s central display. Its creator became famous in Europe for finding a way to activate FSD (Supervised) before Tesla obtained approval for it on the Old Continent. It seems this pushed the manufacturer over the edge, prompting legal action from the company. The domain disappeared from the internet, and Tesla Android platforms can no longer be purchased.

What’s next for the Tesla Android project?

The software seemed harmless; before the era of unauthorized FSD (Supervised) activation, it didn’t significantly modify Tesla’s software. Experience from many companies shows that such fan-made unofficial extensions expand customer bases, even if they operate outside the boundaries of conventional legal frameworks. A minor dispute that arose between Michał Gapiński (the creator of Tesla Android) and a Tesla employee in Europe on one of the social media platforms indicated that even American employees at the manufacturer are interested in this solution. In a positive sense of the word.

However, the split revealed what can happen when tensions escalate. Calling the system “Tesla Android” was an attempt to mimic the “Tesla” brand, implying that buyers were dealing with a manufacturer-approved solution. This was not the case. As long as the creator innocently expanded software capabilities in cars, his activities were overlooked. When he began selling CAN keys that modified communication between car modules to activate FSD (Supervised), Tesla essentially had no choice.

In Poland, the account Czarek Jachowski (@czarekjachowski) on Iksa posted the most videos featuring FSD (Supervised). It served as good advertising for the 500 euro dongle, but it also clearly indicated who brought an unapproved solution to market. Given that Tesla had been waiting for months at that time for certification of its solution in the Netherlands, failing to respond to this unofficial modification could not only delay the system’s approval process but also expose the manufacturer to criminal charges of negligence. Even one of Elon Musk’s performance thresholds was at risk, meaning the matter involved hundreds of millions of euros.

TeslaAndroid.com is not working today. Michał Gapiński, the hacker and creator of the Tesla Android project, has not responded to our question about what happened. We can only assume it was a cease & desist letter from Tesla, informing the Polish developer that the matter could have serious legal and financial consequences. The platform might return to the market under a different name, but that would be risky as it would constitute a repeat offense against the manufacturer’s warnings.

A small piece of me died today: teslaandroid(dot)com went down, and it’ll surely take some time before, if ever, it gets back.

I’ll continue to support the project, including the Android 16 update later this year, but there are a few things I need to figure out before pulling… pic.twitter.com/0Es1qBqME4
