Starting at 28,000 € with a ZERO label: the impressive Chinese hybrid 4x4 SUV already available in Spain

Great Wall Motors or GWM is one of the latest Chinese brands to enter Spain. It did so with two main advantages: vehicles offering a good quality-price ratio and, most importantly, a wide range of mechanical options. This is evident in its first hybrid SUV with 223 CV, which we have already tested.

Now, this Chinese manufacturer has introduced its second SUV in Spain. It is a formidable vehicle named the Haval 7. Featuring rugged styling inspired by classic 4x4s — with Jeep having an electric version of its flagship 4x4 — it measures 4.80 meters in length, 1.89 meters in width, 1.66 meters in height, and has a wheelbase of 2.74 meters.

And if you doubt its off-road capabilities, fine—it’s an SUV; but it offers a ground clearance of up to 21 cm. Of the three powertrain options available in Spain, starting at just 28,000 € including discounts, all can include 4x4 drive, and one of them also comes with the highly sought-after CERO label.

Eco and CERO labels, 4x4 drive, and up to 435 HP—whose offering is best?

If GWM already announced at its launch in Spain that it intended to offer various powertrain options to buyers, its new SUV starting at 28,000 € fulfills this goal perfectly.

Not without reason, its range starts with a diesel version labeled C, equipped with a 2.0 Turbo gasoline engine delivering 215 HP and 380 Nm of torque, but it comes standard with a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4x4 drive. Fuel efficiency isn’t its strongest point — it consumes 9.6 L/100 km — but it remains an interesting option if you’re looking for a spacious and robust 4x4 SUV.

Its second available engine option, the conventional hybrid, makes much more sense. It combines a 1.5 L gasoline engine producing 150 HP with an electric motor to deliver 247 HP and 535 Nm of torque, all transmitted to the front wheels alone.

We say it’s the most logical choice because with this engine, this impressive hybrid SUV with ECO labeling achieves a reasonable fuel consumption of 6.5 L/100 km. Additionally, it’s the cheapest Haval H7, available in its base Explore trim for 28,000 euros. This hybrid version is also available with 4x4 drive, thanks to another electric motor added to the rear axle.

The technological pinnacle of this Chinese SUV is reached with its plug-in hybrid versions, which come in two types. Both share a 33.7 kWh battery, allowing them to achieve electric-only ranges of 150 km and 129 km respectively. What about their total range? The brand previously mentioned over 1,000 km, but it has not yet released the final figure based on WTLP certification.

Two trims

This Chinese hybrid SUV, which even comes with a ZERO emission label, is already available in Spain in two trims: Advance and Explorer. As standard, the entire range includes a 12.3” digital dashboard, along with a 15.6” central multimedia screen and a wireless phone charger.

The higher trim includes, among other features, a Head Up Display that projects the most relevant information onto the inside of the front windshield; as well as heated and ventilated electric seats or a heated steering wheel.
