Denza Z9S: BYD’s new premium sedan offers nearly 900 km of range and a 9-minute charging time

BYD has launched the new Denza Z9S in China, a premium sedan measuring 5,090 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width, 1,490 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,025 mm. Despite its large size, its price in China is comparable to that of the Tesla Model 3, costing only 255,800 yuan (approximately 33,466 euros at the current exchange rate).

The Z9S is a 100% electric vehicle available in three versions. The base model features a single motor, rear-wheel drive, and delivers 503 horsepower. Its 102 kWh battery provides a CLTC range of 920 km. The mid-tier version has the same power output but comes with a 122 kWh battery pack, enabling a CLTC range of 1,100 km, making it the most powerful electric car on the Chinese market.

The top-tier model features three engines (one at the front and two at the back), all-wheel drive, and a combined power output of 1,210 HP (890 kW), enough to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.68 seconds. Interestingly, this version has a smaller battery, resulting in a CLTC range of 780 km. Under the European WLTP cycle, its ranges are 745 km, 891 km, and 632 km respectively.

All three variants come equipped with the Flash Charging 2.0 ultra-fast charging system, which allows the vehicle to reach 70% charge in 5 minutes and 97% charge in 9 minutes. Currently, BYD is expanding a comprehensive network of ultra-fast charging stations not only in China but also in Europe; therefore, the Denza Z9S will be an ideal vehicle for travel due to both its range and charging speeds.

The Denza Z9S is directly competing with the Audi A6 e-tron and BMW i5.

The Z9S features a 13.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 17.3-inch central touchscreen, and a 50-inch head-up display. As it is a premium vehicle, the interior boasts Nappa leather upholstery, an alcantara-covered roof, and various decorative metal trims. The passenger seat includes a magnetic panel that allows a tablet to be attached.

Passengers in the second row have a 7-inch screen on the central armrest, which allows them to control the infotainment system, climate control, or seat settings. As expected, the vehicle is equipped with the latest version of God’s Eye autonomous driving system. Another notable technology is the intelligent DiSus-A air suspension.

With this launch, Denza continues to develop a lineup capable of competing with traditional premium brands. While the Z9GT targets the Porsche Taycan and Panamera Sport Turismo, and the Z targets the Porsche 911, the Z9S seems more aimed at competing against the Audi A6 e-tron, BMW i5, and Mercedes-Benz EQE, although the latter will soon be replaced by an electric Class E.
