Will dealers make us forget about Chinese cars for maintenance? BYD Atto 3 inspection for 505 euros, 2,100 zł. Includes oil change.

A surprising bill from a German BYD authorized service center. The maintenance check for the 2024 BYD Atto 3 with less than 5,000 kilometers on it cost exactly 504.92 euros, equivalent to 2,140 Polish zlotys. The cost of parts was minimal, but due to the large number of tasks performed, labor hours accounted for 3/4 of the total expense, nearly 365 euros, or about 1,550 zlotys. The customer had every right to feel slightly surprised.
German retaliation for low prices of Chinese electric cars?
The invoice was posted on X by a person promoting Tesla cars, but it seems he overlooked the most important aspect of the issue. For him, what stood out was that the BYD brand requires regular inspections, whereas Teslas do not need such checks. These visits to ASO shops end up costing unexpectedly much—here, for a two-year-old car with only 4,953 kilometers on the odometer (which is minimal), the owner paid an amount equivalent to over 2,140 Polish zlotys. Most of these repairs are hard to consider reasonable (automatic translation of the invoice below):

Even cheap manufacturers like BYD get every penny back twice after luring you in with tempting offers.

Replacing the dust filter at such a low mileage is barely justifiable; the car has already had at least two springs, and there was quite a bit of dust. Replacing the brake fluid seems like Audi’s old good idea to ensure that buyers of the e-tron (later: Q8 e-tron) don’t leave the dealership with an overly low invoice, so the dealership won’t suffer financially and the Audi customer will surely get used to saving on both fuel and maintenance. However, the most absurd is replacing 0.6 liters of oil in the transmission.

Well, that’s not right: at 5,000 kilometers, the oil should be as clean as it was when new. If it needs to be replaced, then the manufacturer must have made a mistake (too many particles? other contaminants?) and should bear the costs. Since ASO is doing the replacement, this service must be included in BYD’s specifications. Either the car was extremely heavily used [this can’t be ruled out—so why aren’t other repairs done as well?], or the Chinese company agreed to some unnecessary actions by the service centers so they could make a profit. The customer pays (and cries): 19 parts and labor hours amount to roughly 1.6 or 1.9 actual clock hours spent on the car. It’s easy to calculate that this corresponds to a rate of at least 192 euros, or 815 zlotys per hour.
