DAF and Einride are advancing autonomous electric freight transportation

DAF Trucks and Einride have announced a joint initiative to integrate the autonomous driving system “Einride Driver” into DAF’s premium vehicle platform. This collaboration aims to accelerate the widespread commercialization of autonomous electric freight transportation at SAE Level 4. The industry faces challenges such as a shortage of drivers and rising operating costs.
SAE Level 4 denotes a high degree of driving automation, where vehicles can independently perform repetitive driving tasks under predefined conditions without human intervention. This allows available drivers to focus on logistics operations where specialized knowledge and judgment provide the greatest value.
As a first step, DAF and Einride are working with experts from the Dutch research institute TNO to define and test the integration. The foundation for this effort is DAF’s electric truck platform, with the goal of establishing the necessary interfaces for safe and scalable autonomous operation.
With TNO’s support, DAF and Einride are also working with type approval authorities to ensure the platform meets standards for future deployment on public roads. Initial testing and validation of key interfaces are scheduled for 2026. By 2027, Einride’s autonomous driving software is planned to be integrated and put into operation, along with additional interface validations and functional tests on a DAF truck.
The initiative builds on PACCAR’s previous efforts in autonomous driving. Extensive experience has already been gained through the North American Autonomous Vehicle Platform program, while PACCAR simultaneously works with new full-stack technology providers to develop autonomous trucks. The insights from these programs provide DAF and Einride with additional opportunities to accelerate the development of autonomous functions within the DAF platform.
Einride’s CTO, Henrik Green, said, “This partnership reinforces our vehicle-agnostic autonomy approach and brings us one step closer to delivering safe, scalable Level 4 autonomy on a commercial scale.” DAF’s chief engineer and board member, Jeroen van den Oetelaar, described the collaboration as a reflection of DAF’s commitment to innovation and long-term sustainability in the logistics sector. By combining DAF’s truck platform with autonomous technology, the company aims to create a “more efficient, safer, and more sustainable freight ecosystem.”
DAF from the Netherlands offers electric trucks ranging from the 12-ton XB Electric for urban distribution to the XG and XG+ Electric for long-distance transport. The XG Electric and XG+ Electric share their design DNA with the XD and XF Electric series. Einride is a Swedish technology company focused on cost-effective autonomous and electric freight transportation.
