While most Western manufacturers have focused their efforts on developing larger sedans and SUVs, there is a growing demand for compact, affordable, and efficient alternatives designed specifically for daily commuting. In this context, the Vietnamese manufacturer VinFast has shown intent to bring its smallest model to international markets, targeting Europe with the VF 2. It is a bold move, especially after failing in the continent with its previous models.
This electric microcar is specifically designed to address traffic congestion and parking issues in large cities. With extremely compact dimensions, about 60 centimeters shorter than a utility vehicle like the Fiat 500e, the VF 2 falls within a price range similar to that of a motorcycle, yet it offers the protection of a two-door enclosed body and space for four passengers.
A solution designed solely for the city
The VinFast VF 2 has a total length of 3.09 meters, a width of 1.49 meters, and a height of 1.66 meters, with a wheelbase of 2.06 meters. These dimensions make it a direct competitor to models such as the Fiat Topolino or the Citroën Ami, though it offers four seats instead of two.
In terms of mechanics, the Vietnamese brand focuses on operational simplicity to keep costs and weight low. The VF 2 is equipped with an electric motor located on the rear axle, delivering 30 kW (40 HP) of power along with a torque of 65 Nm. This motor is powered by a battery pack with a capacity of 18.3 kWh. According to the NEDC testing cycle, this setup allows for a theoretical range of up to 210 kilometers on a single charge, a figure more than sufficient for several days of urban driving without needing to recharge. Its top speed is limited to 80 km/h, suitable for metropolitan areas and peripheral roads.
Essential features without compromising on basic amenities
Despite its low-cost approach and very affordable entry price in its home market, the interior doesn’t lack functional elements for everyday use. The dashboard features a 7-inch digital screen for instrumentation and media control, along with an integrated air conditioning system. The exterior is completed with LED headlights and 13-inch alloy wheels.
In terms of active and passive safety, the VF 2 includes a driver airbag, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution, and traction control. While this is a basic setup compared to the ADAS found in higher-end models, it meets the requirements for city driving.
How would VF 2 fit into the European ecosystem?
The potential introduction of this product to the European market would reflect a shifting trend, where consumers seek extremely low-cost zero-emission mobility solutions to use as a second vehicle for the household or to replace trips by public transport or bicycle. The idea of selling an electric vehicle at such affordable prices opens up a range of possibilities for both individuals and fleets used for shared services or last-mile delivery.
The main challenge for its entry into the old continent will be adapting its technical specifications and safety systems to European homologation standards. If its official distribution is confirmed, this Vietnamese brand will join the growing competition of electric microcities aimed at making electric mobility accessible in European cities.
