Like a mini Tesla: the next Peugeot E-208 will be manufactured in Spain and will make technology its main selling point

Little by little, new details about the upcoming Peugeot E-208 are coming to light. Unlike the current generation, which is based on the conventional 208, the new model will be entirely electric; it will still be produced at Stellantis’ plant in Figueruelas (Zaragoza), where the new Opel Corsa Electric will also be manufactured. Both models are expected to coexist for an undetermined period alongside updated versions of their conventional predecessors.

The design of the new E-208 was previewed by the recent E-T16 Concept prototype, which pays homage to the 205 T16 from the 1980s. In fact, the first two generations of the 208 already featured some nods to the 205, one of Peugeot’s most beloved classics; however, the third generation will go a step further by reinterpreting the key features of this legendary “sacré numéro” in a modern style.

Initially, the front optical groups will consist of three horizontal LED strips that run across the front from side to side, a solution that somewhat resembles the three-plate grille of the 205. The rear window will have a completely vertical cut, while the C-pillar will feature a decorative trim—two aesthetic elements directly borrowed from the three-door 205 (the E-208 will have five doors). The headlights, on the other hand, will be square in shape.

But while the exterior will be a retro-futuristic remake of the E-208, the interior aims to break conventions and have no connection to the past. This electric SUV will introduce Peugeot’s new generation of i-Cockpit, which will be characterized by features such as the rectangular Hypersquare steering wheel, an element that will later be adopted across the rest of the model range.

This steering wheel will feature four circular openings with various controls. It will be paired with an electronic by-wire steering system, meaning there will be no mechanical connection between the wheel and the wheels. The steering ratio will adjust dynamically based on speed, allowing for precise maneuvering in urban areas without the need for multiple turns of the wheel.

The new E-208 is also expected to become one of the electric cars with the longest range in the B-segment, potentially achieving around 500 km WLTP in its most powerful versions. While the current model uses NCM (nickel, cobalt, manganese) batteries, its successor will adopt LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) chemistry. The cells will be supplied by CATL, which is building a gigafactory in the vicinity of Figueruelas.

Initially, its debut and commercial release are set for next year. Unlike competitors such as the Renault 5 or Volkswagen ID. Polo, which appeal to nostalgia and practicality respectively to attract customers, the Peugeot E-208 will focus on technology as its main selling point, thanks to the use of Stellantis’ new STLA One platform.
