CHINA. Chery expands recall campaign. Rear axle failure in Omoda 5 and Tiggo 5X (Tiggo 4) models

In Malaysia, there have been at least several cases where the rear axle came off in Omoda 5 vehicles. The issue affected only diesel variants and the Malaysian market, so we did not report it, but the manufacturer has now expanded the recall to China. China, as the home country of the Chery group, may have received models from various series—including those intended for export. We still do not have confirmation whether electric vehicles (Omoda E5, its sibling Jaecoo E5) are affected.

Poor welds at the rear. It’s surprising.

According to information from CnEVPost, Chery Auto has launched a recall in China involving nearly 54,000 units of the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 5X models. These vehicles were produced between June 6, 2022, and December 31, 2023, meaning they could have arrived in Europe as part of the first shipments — but not necessarily reached us. And if they did, it might only be the Omoda 5 models, as the Tiggo 5X has only been sold in Poland since 2026 under the name Tiggo 4.

Of course, if someone decides to import a car privately, they face problems...

The Tiggo 5X is sold in Europe as the Tiggo 4, but only starting in 2026, so long after the period when those problematic models were produced. Incidentally, note the arrangement of the rear wheels, as if the manufacturer is warning about issues with the rear axle even on its own website (source).

A Chery representative explained that the broken rear axle is due to a defective manufacturing process. In some units, the welds and the axle housing are said to be problematic, failing to withstand the stresses. Interestingly, the cars photographed so far, where the rear wheels popped out from under the vehicle, were on flat roads, sometimes major city streets, not in off-road areas or even near curbs that could overload the chassis components (downhill or uphill slopes). This suggests material fatigue is occurring (source).

The Malaysian transportation department decided to suspend the homologation of the Omoda 5, preventing registration of this model even in its latest versions. Chery publicly apologized for the incident, announced a recall campaign, and has now decided to carry out a service campaign in its home country. However, the Omoda 5 was not very popular in China, and production of the car eventually focused only on export. The same is true for the Tiggo 5X/Tiggo 4, which in Poland is one of the cheapest used hybrid (HEV) vehicles on the market.
