Chinese SVolt begins mass production of nearly solid-state batteries with a capacity of 100 kWh. 6 C charging rate, 900 V voltage.

The Chinese cell and battery manufacturer SVolt announced on Monday, October 26, that the first batch of 100 kWh capacity packs had left its production lines. These are batteries equipped with solid-electrolyte cells, meaning the liquid makes up no more than 5 percent of the electrolyte’s volume. It will soon be revealed in which vehicles these new batteries will be used, as they have reportedly attracted interest from several customers.
Semi-solid-state batteries moving closer to commercialization
The packs are named Dragon Armor and can store 100 kWh of energy. They can be charged at a rate of 6 C, allowing them to reach a specific range level (10-70 percent, 10-80 percent, or 10-97 percent) within 10 minutes. The manufacturer claims an additional 500 CLTC range units after 12 minutes of charging, which is not particularly impressive compared to brands using regular batteries. This translates to around 390 WLTP units, or 230 kilometers at a speed of 120 km/h [calculations by Elektrowozu editorial team].
CnEVPost claims that a separator printing method [on the electrodes] was used during the production of new cells, but it does not go into further details. A small amount of electrolyte moistens the surfaces and facilitates ion transfer. The battery is designed to operate at 900 V (800 V architecture), with cooling plates located in the upper and lower parts of the casing (illustration below). The manufacturer promises 3,000 cycles of operation and a lower plate that can withstand impacts three times greater than those required by Chinese regulations.
SVolt’s semi-solid-state package
SVolt believes that solid-liquid electrolyte cells will be an important, long-term solution for powering electric vehicles. It does not view them as a [short-term] transitional step toward solid electrolyte batteries. Semi-solid-state battery packs are only expected to enter mainstream use over time, although SVolt claims their prices will be similar to those of comparable batteries using liquid electrolyte cells — suggesting there are other objective barriers to their widespread commercialization.
SVolt was part of Great Wall Motor for a long time, which is why there are rumors that the first vehicles equipped with the new battery will appear in GWM models. The most likely candidate appears to be the Tank brand, which specializes in producing off-road vehicles and does not yet have a fully electric model.
