Chargemaker will become operator of 300 Lufthansa charging stations

Chargemaker GmbH, based in Frankfurt, is gradually taking over the operation of charging infrastructure for Lufthansa Group in Germany. In the first step, Chargemaker will manage over 100 charging stations at the Lufthansa Aviation Center, the headquarters of Lufthansa Group located at Frankfurt Airport.

In total, Chargemaker is set to take over more than 300 existing charging stations at various locations across the Lufthansa Group. This charging infrastructure specialist, part of energy service provider Ista, will now be responsible for billing different user groups within the company, among other tasks. After acquiring the existing infrastructure, “an expansion to additional locations of the Lufthansa Group will be carried out in line with demand,” according to the company based in Frankfurt.

"The challenge isn't just the number of charging points. What's crucial is integrating different locations, companies, and user groups into one system," says Florian Kasten, Head of Sales, Industry Solutions at Chargemaker. "That's exactly why we create a unified and scalable solution. Lufthansa Group can centrally manage its charging infrastructure while still addressing the needs of individual locations. We're very excited to continue developing this infrastructure together."

Chargemaker states that it will take on the entire service package under these circumstances – including remote monitoring and troubleshooting of charging stations, regular maintenance and repair, a customer support hotline, and billing for all charging sessions. An intelligent load management system distributes the available connection capacity across all charging stations at a location. For example, short-term parkers can be given priority during the day, while vehicles that stay longer can charge at night.

Chargemaker was founded in 2020 as a joint venture between the Dussmann Group and the regional energy provider Mainovage. In 2024, it was acquired by Ista, a company known for its water and heat meters as well as related billing services, which has since positioned itself as a real estate and energy services provider.

According to the company, Chargemaker operates around 4,500 charging stations in Europe, primarily located at residential buildings and for industrial and commercial customers. Notable projects include the installation of 130 charging stations at the Tower185 in Frankfurt am Main, as well as equipping 300 parking spaces in the FOUR high-rise complex with charging stations — also in Frankfurt.

And this is just the beginning: By 2030, parent company Ista plans to invest up to 30 million euros in Chargemaker. The goal is to build and operate 25,000 new charging stations in Germany, according to the management. This move comes as Ista has explicitly identified the expansion of charging infrastructure as a strategic area for growth. Chargemaker has now secured another prominent client in Lufthansa.
