It’s already the end for this rival to the Tesla Model 3, which arrived in France just one year ago!

The Polestar 2 is seeing its last moments. After over six years of production in China and around 200,000 units manufactured, this electric sedan is retiring from the market. This disappearance comes just a year after its official launch in the French market... But the Swedish manufacturer is already preparing the successor.

This marks the end of an era for Polestar. According to Norwegian media TV2, production of the Polestar 2 has ceased at the factory in Taizhou, China. The manufacturer has not yet officially confirmed the shutdown of its production lines, but several signs indicate that this electric sedan has reached the end of its journey.

Over 200,000 Polestar 2s manufactured in China

Launched in 2020, the Polestar 2 holds a special place in the manufacturer’s history. It is its first fully electric model produced on a large scale.

This sedan, competing primarily with the Tesla Model 3, has played a significant role in raising awareness of the Swedish brand in Europe. In total, slightly over 200,000 units are said to have been assembled in China. The car has undergone several updates over the years, including a major technical upgrade in 2023 for the 2024 model year. The single-motor versions, in particular, shifted from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive.

Today, the options for ordering are decreasing. In Norway and Sweden, customers are now directed to vehicles available in stock.

On the French configuration tool, the Polestar 2 is still available in its three versions: Standard Range Single Motor, Long Range Single Motor, and Long Range Dual Motor. But there’s a detail indicating this is the end: it’s no longer possible to modify the offered configurations. In other words, French customers must now settle for the units still in stock, without the ability to customize their vehicle.

A new generation expected by 2027

Nevertheless, Polestar has no intention of abandoning this market segment. The manufacturer is preparing a completely new replacement, with its launch scheduled for the first half of 2027. It will not be a simple restyle. The features of this upcoming generation remain unknown. Its technical architecture, design silhouette, and manufacturing location have not been officially revealed. Several possibilities exist, including European production, but nothing has been confirmed.

This renewal comes at a challenging time for Polestar. In the first half of 2026, its global sales increased by only 0.4%, reaching 30,423 vehicles. Having been driven out of the United States, the manufacturer has also lowered its growth targets for the year.

Europe now accounts for about 80% of its sales. With the next generation expected in 2027, Polestar must successfully navigate this transition without losing ground in its main market.
