Charging an electric car on the street could become cheaper by 2027

The ERSE’s proposal to reduce certain fees for public charging networks is expected to result in savings for drivers.
Since the beginning of October, price increases for electricity in the regulated market have led to higher costs for home charging. However, for public charging, next year should bring good news.
The Energy Services Regulatory Entity (ERSE) proposes reducing some of the fees applied to public charging networks managed by Mobi.E. in 2027. This measure should help lower charging costs, though the reduction experienced by drivers will be significantly less than the announced percentage.
The proposal calls for a 52.1% reduction in the fees charged to energy distributors for electric mobility and to charging station operators. For those who own charging stations, the proposed reduction is 51.3%.
However, these fees account for only 1% to 2% of the final price paid by drivers, so the impact on charging costs will be limited.
15 cents less per 100 km
Despite the small percentage, according to ERSE, for an electric car with an average consumption of 15 kWh per 100 km, it should result in savings of about 15 cents per 100 kilometers traveled.
With the new fees, the average cost to cover that distance should be 7.32 euros at a regular charging station with a capacity of up to 22 kW; and 10.53 euros at a fast charging station with a capacity above 22 kW.
The price difference between the two types of charging is mainly due to the service fee charged by the charging station operator. The final cost also includes the electricity price, network access fees, and taxes.

New rates still need to be approved
The ERSE’s proposal still must receive the opinion of the Tariff Council before being approved by the regulator’s board of directors. If approved, it will take effect on January 1, 2027, covering charges for charging at Portugal’s public electric mobility network.
The review comes amid growing usage of this charging network. In 2025, over 8.89 million charges were made through 23,156 charging points.

For 2026, ERSE estimates around 11.8 million charges, though it acknowledges uncertainty regarding the network’s development in 2027, particularly due to the possibility that some operators might leave the centralized platform.
