“Ready in five minutes, full in nine”: With this slogan, BYD introduces the charging capabilities of the new Seal 07, the family sedan in its Ocean series’ E segment, which is getting a second generation and is already available for pre-orders in China. The company does so without revealing the price, a practice known there as blind pre-ordering, allowing customers to express their intent to buy before knowing the cost of the vehicle.

This update comes just a few months after the launch of the Seal 07 EV, which went on sale in March, and at a challenging time for the Seal series, whose sales have declined this year. BYD’s response is a larger vehicle equipped with magnetorheological suspension, along with electric and plug-in hybrid versions.

Those who place a reservation now will have priority in production and delivery, and can keep the full price until they confirm the order. Since the reservation is only a sign of interest, customers can change the color and configuration once the car is launched. There will be six body colors and three interior combinations, though the brand has not yet announced the launch date.

Larger, with a front trunk and advanced suspension

The new Seal 07 is 5,080 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, and 1,495 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,960 mm. It is 85 mm longer and 60 mm wider than the March release of the Seal 07 EV, with a trunk volume of 618 liters, plus an additional 160-liter front storage space. Its design follows the Ocean Aesthetics 2.0 style and resembles closely the Seal 08 introduced in June.

The major innovation lies in the chassis. It features the DiSus-M body control system, equipped with shock absorbers filled with magnetorheological fluid that adjusts their stiffness in milliseconds. This technology was first introduced by BYD in September on the Fang Cheng Bao Formula S series. It is paired with a double wishbone front suspension and a reinforced five-link rear axle.

Up to 408 HP and 9-minute charging time

According to data registered with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the electric version of the Seal 07 will come in two power trims, with outputs of 333 and 408 horsepower, both higher than the 326 horsepower of the March model. Both versions use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and can reach speeds of 240 kilometers per hour. The range has not been officially announced yet, but for reference, the current Seal 07 EV is equipped with a 69 kWh battery and achieves up to 705 kilometers of range in China’s CLTC testing cycle.

The battery will be the second-generation Blade, compatible with BYD’s Flash Charging. When introducing this technology in March, the brand announced it can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes—figures that align with the slogan chosen for the Seal 07, though it has not been confirmed whether it will be able to achieve such charging speeds.

The records also mention a plug-in hybrid version that retains the name Seal 07 DM-i. It combines a 1.5 turbo gasoline engine producing 156 horsepower with an electric motor producing 218 horsepower and a battery of 38,029 kWh, giving it an electric range of 245 kilometers according to the WLTC cycle. So far, BYD has not clarified whether this version is also available for reservation.

A family that needs a boost

For reference, the March 2024 Seal 07 EV is sold in China in two versions at 169,900 and 189,900 yuan, equivalent to around 22,100 and 24,700 euros. If the new generation is priced at similar levels, the magnetorheological suspension will clearly occupy a lower tier within BYD’s lineup. This refresh comes as sales of the Seal series are declining. In September, 46,718 units were sold, 9.04% less than a year earlier and 1.57% less than in August, with cumulative sales from January to September at 304,723 units, a 14.11% drop. The Seal 07 itself managed only 1,005 deliveries in August across its electric and hybrid versions.
