BYD will showcase a car with a solid-state battery next year. Production remains unconfirmed.
BYD is set to unveil its first model with a solid electrolyte battery next year. The company’s vice president, Stella Li, told Carwow.es that it will be a single vehicle, but she did not confirm the start of sales or mass production.
This distinction is the most interesting here. A ready-made prototype can be shown quickly, whereas large-scale production of solid-state cells still poses challenges for the entire industry.
The first model could be the flagship Yangwang
“When it comes to solid-state batteries, BYD is at the forefront. To prove this, we will have one model next year—the first model using this technology,” said Stella Li.
She did not provide the car’s name, launch date, battery capacity, or energy density. We also don’t know whether it is a model intended for customers, a limited demonstration series, or a single show car. From a marketing perspective, all three options can be referred to as the “first model.”
According to CarNewsChina, the new battery could be used in a large limousine from the Yangwang brand. The disguised car shown by BYD recently has a silhouette similar to the Rolls-Royce Phantom and is set to be the most luxurious model in the company’s lineup.
This choice would make financial sense. The first solid-electrolyte batteries will be expensive, so it is easier to hide their cost in a Yangwang limousine than in a BYD Dolphin Surf. If it isn’t a new Yangwang, the next candidates are the Denza Z9 and BYD Great Tang.
Toyota aims for 2027-2028, Honda and Mercedes for 2030
Solid-state batteries are expected to offer higher energy density, lower weight, improved safety, and faster charging. The challenges remain in achieving consistent production and controlling costs. Without specific battery parameters and scale information, BYD’s claim remains a statement rather than a technical advantage over competitors.
Toyota plans to introduce an electric vehicle equipped with such a battery by 2027 or 2028. Honda targets a timeline closer to 2030, as does Mercedes. Hyundai is also working on its own solution.
BYD might surpass rivals by showing a fully developed vehicle, but the real competition will be determined by the number of batteries produced, their durability, and cost.
